Knee high by the 4th?

Took some pics of my corn yesterday. In our area they always used to say knee high by the 4th and you were good. Mine made it this year except a small section planted later that is close. I'm not sure that old saying means much anymore with the new corn hybreds. Good is your doing?

Most of mine is knee to waist high. It's getting green after the flooding. I was just up to the north where they had as much or even more rain that we did. A LOT of short yellow corn.

Here in Tennessee mine is about 10 ft tall, started an ear and I have about 4 plants for ever one you have. If it does not get hot and dry in August we may have a record breaking crop coming, sure looks good at this point.

Our sweet corn could probably pass for knee high, at least one variety. Second variety is somewhat shorter and much lighter green. Planted two days apart. Shows what differences can happen between varities. Ambrosia is clearly ahead this year. Couple years ago I posted a picture of my wife peering out of a patch of shoulder high sweet corn on the 4th, only her face is showing.

Randy, did you ever figure out what was with that field of corn you had that was purlpe, a few years back? Saw a field west of Alma on M-46 Friday that was REALLY purple. Made yours look normal.

No. It came out of it. Looked for all the world to me like a phosphorous deficiency.

Some of the worst corn around seemed like it was up your way today. I wouldn't have thought some of that sandy ground would have been that effected by all the rain, unless it washed the nitrogen out or something.

Field corn has visible ears here. Gathered sweet corn yesterday that was planted Apr. 15. We've got a good corn crop due to plenty of rain so far. Beans are off to a good start. Tobacco is looking good also. Around here the rule of thumb is you can't have a good crop out of all 3 in the same year due to different weather requirements but so far, so good. (W. Ky.)

If the corn on my place was mine and not the renters there would be a combine in it today. At least shelling a sample. Probably not more than 75 bushels about half a crop needed a couple more rains. It was planted about the first of March and could have gotten away with Valentine's Day with no damage. If he could have guessed that the yield would be a lot better. Tony

I lost Willie a few weeks ago. Vet looked at ultrasound and xrays and said he was full of tumors. He died 5 days later. MIght want to have him checked- Willie just started slowing down and I didn't really notice it until too late....

How old of dog was he? Tin is 5 now and full of vinegar. Sorry about the loss of your pup. They sure do become part of the family.

Im about that high or a little more. Knee high to a horse. I have the tallest in the area. Planted mid May. Played with a drought for a few weeks but rain returned.

From eastern OH- knee high is a left over from days gone by. Usually its at least waist high on the 4th. This year, not so good. Probably 15% waist high, 50% knee high, and 35% less than knee high. this is one of the worst corn growth stages at July 4th I can remember in awhile, and its not drought related. Basically too much moisture delaying planting.
