Prepare for the worst, some times you get it

Picking up my last 12 bales of hay, had these stored
along the driveway at the other farm. Never would
have thought that I couldn't just drive up to them ,
and pick them up, but as you can see , water has
filled the wheel tracks left from last time , so I have
to grab them from over the side of the driveway.
I never like to sell my self short of feed , and made
sure I kept enough back till the end of June. Here it
is July first , and I haven't made a bale yet this year.
These last 12 bales on the wagon will carry me till
next week. It had better stop raining , I will be out of
hay.

We're finally getting dried out some. I rolled 215 bales this week. Just got done cutting the last 22 acres. One end of the field was a little squishy, but I made it without cutting in.

A bad hail/rain storm just skimmed by to our north a few days ago. It's been consistently wet here, but no flooding, until now.

.4" yesterday afternoon in short order(on relatively dry ground) so far, so good.

.9" early this morning, came OK, so far, so good.

1" this afternoon in a few minutes. NOT good. Flooding everywhere.

I understand how you feel, haven't made 1 bale yet. Had to buy a couple from a local farmer that was able to made some2 weeks ago. Sadly he told me probably some will have dust because some had 18% moisture when be baled that. My alpacas won't like it but it's better than having nothing to give them.

Weather wise tomorrow showers, monday cloudy, and tuesday to thursday sun so unless of a dramatic change monday afternon we both will be gambling the weather will stay nice and cut some hay. We'll have to ted the heck out of it however soil is soaking wet

Its a crazy world, we can't seem to catch moisture and others can't avoid it. This weeks drought monitor. Hope you get some sunshine soon.

I know the feeling of being short on hay. We had a light drought in 1983. I had to buy hay and cull my brood cow herd hard. In 1984 I bought my first round baler. The next several years I baled anything that would make hay. Even the road right of ways. So when the major drought of 1988 came along I had hay on hand. Not the best but it beat snow balls.

Bruce I really feel for you. You need pretty good hay for your dairy cows. That is hard to do in years like this. Is there a local hay market/auction??? We have several here. One just north 15 miles has a weekly sale. Everything from junk CRP hay to high quality diary hay. They get loads of hay and straw from as far away as Canada. So at least we usually can find hay to buy to hold one over.

When I was a kid I and the farmer that I worked for were baling some really junk hay. It must have been in August and it was not usual hay ground. There was a lot of goldenrod and even small brush in it. He could see my questioning it and said "come April there will be somebody who will be very happy to get this."
