Red oak fire wood

The buyer for the local sawmill was here today and said I have another 59 red oaks ready for harvest. Last time I logged,I gave the tops to my nephews. They monkeyed around, got most of them cleaned up before they got punky. I figured this time I'd try to sell them to somebody, all on,cash in advance, take'em all and get'em out'a here.

Anybody got an estimate what they be worth each? $20 a top? More? Less?

North of you where I am at, I see all different offers on Craigslist for the same thing. Some offers are $20.00 a pickup load, some are free, and about everything in between. I think it sort of depends on how much the owner wants it removed and cleaned up?

The going rate around here would be $180 a cord, cut split and delivered. How many tops to a cord? I would guess it's worth about half of that if it's accessible.

"How many tops to a cord?"

That's kinda what I want to know,if anybody has cut any and has an idea. They're average sized saw log type trees.

I'd go by the pick up load

Then tree size doesn't matter

Ya,but how many loads will go out of there when I'm not looking? I'd rather sell it all to somebody and get my money right up front. It's down the road a ways where I can't always see what's going on.

Randy, call the Montcalm Conservation District forester, Nick Sanchez, (989) 831-4212 x106. He may be able to answer your questions, he is free of charge, just won't be back in to Stanton until next Wednesday.

All depend on how much of the tops that they harvest. I limb out tops down to about an inch and a half diameter and leave the rest to decompose.
From me to you is too far to buy your tops. HeHe.

Thanks,I'll check with him. I haven't decided if I'm even gonna sell yet, they marked the trees yesterday but I haven't even had time to get out there and look at what they want to take yet.

59 is a lot tops to clean up and as you have found out people have big ideas for them that don't work out. I would try to find somebody who deals in firewood and as you suggested get a lump sum offer for them 1/2 down and other half on time term. If you can't get anyone to bite for the lot then $20 a pick up load is about where it is around here for cut your own tops, firewood around here has gotten real cheap due to EAB.

#1 if you're just letting one outfit come in and give you a price I guarantee you're not getting what the timber is worth.Firewood is plentiful in my area cut your own laps usually goes for around $10
a pickup load.
Best logger I know here will pull the logs out and sort them to size and species and get several mills to come in and bid on them.

A guy near me buys them by the facecord. Since tops are hard to estimate their total wood content, he spends a winter cutting at a certain woods and just pays for the facecords they remove. They have a processor, so they can do I think 30 facecord a day. I think they give 5 or 10 dollars a facecord for what they cut. People think that's cheap, but just like anything elses, they have all the cost and labor into it. 59 trees ain't too many, so it shouldn't take too long for someone to clean them up. I looked at a buddy's place last fall and marked 275 trees, mostly red oak. He was under the impression that the sawmill take tops and all lol. When I told him they don't, he said find one that will. Now he wants me to cut them, but I already told him I don't want the wood either.

I hate to mention this but in today's world if you do a cut your own tops you need to be concerned about somebody getting hurt and then worry about a lawsuit.

A well placed trail cam cures that problem

Most have the date and time on each photo

I used to know several guys who cut and sold firewood. They gave it up with age. The new generation seems to just want to collect disability and smoke dope.

Logger works out the percentage with the landowner before cutting based on things like how big the trees are,any roads that need to be built, size of the parcel, species of trees, etc.
This guy is upfront as far as the money he'll show the landowner all the bids and pays promptly. Also this guy will chip the larger tops and sells them to a wood burning power plant if the landowner
wants him to.

First time I ever logged I got a forester to come in a cruise it. He put it up for bids and got 1. It was for $750. Won't do that again. These local guys have a reputation to uphold and won't screw you over. They wouldn't be in business very long if they kept that up.

Then what? Call the cops? I guarantee they'll say it's a civil matter so take it to court. I'm gonna waste my time trying to sue for every $20 load of wood somebody drives off with claiming they got one when they actually took two. You bet'cha.

You are not allowed to sell firewood by a face cord here in Ohio. Has to be by the full cord.

Before you sign a contract get a forester maybe from the state to advise you which trees to cut and which trees to leave as seed trees. Some Some Loggers can ruin your forest for generations to come.
