update on tire garden

Well, the tire garden idea was a pretty good one if I do say so myself. I haven't used a hoe or tiller this year and the plants have outdone anything I could have hoped for. The wife canned 18 pints and 2 quarts of cucumbers (pickles) besides giving a bunch away to the kids. The squash has gone crazy with fruit. I don't have a clue how many quarts she has frozen and we've had several skillets of fried zucchini and dishes of squash stew. The tomatoes are about 5' tall and are loaded with green ones. The bell peppers have several small ones on them. You can't see the tire the cucumbers are planted in, they are bush plants and have fruit that is only about 5-7" in length. We never intended for the plants to produce that much, but it sure has been great, I will say that I'm selling my 6' 3 point tiller and have my hoes hanging in the building to be used for killing snakes, not working on the garden.

Maybe get one of the Mantis mini tillers so you can work up the ground in the tires ? Mom has one and loves it !

Keith, looks great. I have never cut a tire, but aren't steel belted tires next to impossible to cut? I think that is all I have. Bob

tried that once too but bombed. what did you fill them with, cause when i filled them with soil got so da! hard. wanting to try again put mix soil and sand. what did you do and what did you do to your tire. i just laid tire down and filled. looks nice rick

Filled with nothing but horse manure from the feed lot from last year. Finally found something that horses are good for LOL

I'm not sure but I don't believe the steel belts are in the sidewalls. These were all bias ply tires and it only took about a half an hour to cut all of them.

One of the battery operated tillers might be better for tires. I have a Ryobi since I already had the batteries.
