I got this baler from my granpa and I think I and going to put a thousand dollar into it but I was wondering if they were a good baler or I should up grade to a different baler thanks [color=red:99b23998dc][/color:99b23998dc]

You can spend a grand very easily on new rebuilt knotters and a tune up at the dealer. I spent a grand on my 269 and it hasn't missed a tie on over 500 bales.

Knotter parts are very spendy. For example one knotter frame with new parts installed is north of $800 and there are two of them.

I'd grease it up and oil it down and see how it is going to work. We use wire so I wasn't thinking knotters, but buying new ones seems excessive.

Any baler is like a good woman. You really need to get to know them before you'll be satisfied with your relationship. And running and fixing an old baler is the best way to get to know one.

Good luck with it.

Like the others I wonder what needs $1000 to fix? 278 was
an ok baler. It was the highest capacity baler of the time. I
think it runs faster than a 276, and the feeder is more
complex. I had one for a few years and it was ok. A friend
described it as the baler that would bale 600 bales an hour
but only run for 10 minutes at a time.

They were an OK baler at best... I think the others pretty well covered it. However, if you already have it... you're probably no worse off
spending money on it than another heap of it's vintage.
To anyone questioning how you could spend a grand on it.... I'd question how you could get away ONLY spending a grand on it! New plunger
bearings, knives, a pile of pickup fingers, a tire or two and you're not far off of 2 grand. That's hoping and praying that the knotters need
nothing and work.
