I Have About 30 John Deeres, Most Restored A Few Original.. Thinking Of Down Sizing.. (Getting Older, No Kids, Brother Not Interested In Them) ... What Is The Best Time Of Year To Have A Auction ????

Thanks
Jeff

Early spring as in about 2-3 months ago. That is the time of year when most farmers are gearing up for the next planting/hay season so they are more likely to be looking for stuff to replace what they have or need to have

Classic and antique tractors will sell good just about anytime of the year, but after the planting is done, and before harvest starts would be even better. Winter time is too cold for a lot of collectors to want to get out.

For the collector market probably anytime the temperature is above 50 degrees F outside. The shows don't happen until July and August around here for the most part so even if it were in June guys could get what they want if all the tractor needs is a wash and a wax.

We just got home from the big estate sale in S.W. Iowa and the way things sold I would say NOW!!!---Tee

Thanks.. I Was Thinking Early June... Crops Are Planted And Before People Go On Vacation In July..

Thanks
Jeff

Used to be Fall was a good time when grain prices were high. That trend has definitely softened lately. Spring seems to be a good time for those on the hunt.

If they're collector tractors and you get a good auctioneer who does a good job of advertising,I don't think it matters. Tractors like that probably won't end up in the hands of farmers anyway.

It depends on when the slack time in the area is. You are not targeting farmers because they are no more likely to buy an an antique tractor than the average Joe. Here in the Northeast most guys are less busy in the winter so fall sales seem to draw a lot of guys looking for a winter project.

Where are you located? Close to a Mecum Auction? They get the best money, don't know about % it will cost. They seem to have auctions in Iowa and Pennsylvania. Best of luck! joe

I agree.

The best buy I ever made on a tractor was on an auction when the temp was zero, 6" of snow on the ground, and a 20mph north wind with no protection.

I would agree if you are in a winter climate
rule that out. Also some areas early spring
has cash flow issues or things are tight.

For buyers and lookers -- dead of winter. I like to be holding on to a hot cup of coffee vs. sweating. Just something about cold weather that makes it better.

An off-weekend any a time when buyers are feeling confident and have money in their pockets would be a great time for a sale. An indoor auction, like inside a show ring or the commercial building at a local fair grounds can work well for a winter auction or any time of year. Check out what one would rent for. Some of the advantages would be: good location on or close to paved roads, well marked on most maps for out of town buyers, plenty of good parking with loading facilities, buyers and tractors are out of the weather, your option of heated or unheated building, onsite kitchen/seating/restroom facilities, close to motels, keeps the crowd of lookers off your home place, etc.

Advertising and publicity will be critical. Your auctioneer may be able to combine multiple sales into one large sale. A weekend sale day might bring in more working age buyers and and working professionals (with money).
