Believe it or not ! in news today.

A Canadian sniper set what appears to be a record, picking off an ISIS fighter from some 2.2 miles away,(11316 ft)
and disrupting a potentially deadly operation by the terror group in Iraq.

I think the shooter got lucky !!

If you really think he got lucky would you like to give him a shot at you from 2.2 miles away, did not think so. Nice job by a sniper with some serious skills.

He has probably made that shot before, at the range or some other skill developing scenario. I wish we did not have to put people in positions like this, I'll just have to keep wishing. I thank the Canadian Forces for their service and continued support in the war on terror. gobble

Canucks hold 3 out of the top 5 longest range sniper kills, all with American made TAC - 50 rifles, sounds like a joint venture that's working out pretty good to me.

With a 10 second flight time I think he means 'lucky' the target wasn't moving or in shifting winds.

A moving target would be the only reason for a talented sniper to miss.

There seams to be a whole lot more than luck involved. It was said in the article that I read, that it was a two man team. Everything from windage, rate of drop of the bullet, to curvature of the earth were calculated.
I don't think much was left to luck.

I am just proud he was on the side of our forces and not the other side! We need to congratulate him and not try to downgrade a skilled rifleman like him.

Good shot. These guys are just good. It would be interesting to see the faces on those around the fighter. I doubt the shot was heard, then their buddy just falls over dead. Stan

The extreme range shots are becoming more routine because of the adoption of the .50 cal. Browning cartridge to high quaility rifles like the Barret and the McMillen. I notice this shot was made with a McMillen rifle. The 707 gr. bullet sure helps negate some of the wind, mirage, and other factor that make those shots pretty tough. I would imagine that the transition from super sonic to sub sonic would be smother with a heavy bullet like that also. I believe the legendary Carlos Hathcock was one of the early pioneers experimenting with the .50 BMG as a sniper round.

Things like rifling are so high tech now and so much research has been done these shots are possible now. Go Canadians .

so a 10 second flight time for the bullet? Just think, for 8 or 9 seconds, that ISIS dude was destined to meet Allah and his 72 virgins and didn't even know it!!! He could have said a short A-rab prayer in that time.

This ART of long range shot placement has come a long way in the fifty years of what i did . Spotters, ballistic computers weapons and ammo . From a hand built model 70 to what is now on the market . Not long ago i watched a you Tube vid of long shot made at something like 37-3900 yards with a custom made rifle in 375 cal. . With age i am not as good as i once was but still get the job done even with shooting long for a rifled slug . My hand gun shooting is suffering more as let just say while welding i don't have to try to weave.

Any way to calculate the ft/lbs of force at that tange? Just curious how much of a hit it would be

I Thank the USA for sharing their Technology, and allowing Canadian Soldiers to use their Technology.

The new record was set using a McMillan TAC-50 that shoots a .50 BMG round - the same .50 BMG that the M2 uses. He did not use a M2 with a scope.

Looks a lot like the Barrett .50 bolt action.

I like learning new things. I am glad to hear the Canadian Army is supporting the fight against ISIS, and with such well trained, expert fighting people as this.

It may have even been one of those new computerized triggers where all the spotter info is automatically input into the sight then the shooter adjusts the dot onto the target (which locks it there) then just holds the trigger and the computer fires it when it knows it will hit. Consumer grade versions are already available.

Maybe lucky but more likely good. I love it when one minute these guys are plotting mass murder and the next minute their dead. Its too bad they actually don't know what hit them before they died.

Sadly, the nnalert made a small mistake when translating the quron, the text read "Virginians", not "virgins".

(quoted from post at 12:14:58 06/23/17) of ya. It was on CNN & Fox this morning. but you cannot trust them !

Take Fox with a grain or two of salt and NEVER trust ANYTHING that appears on CNN!

I believe that he was referring to Carlos Hathcock using the M2 .50 on a tripod with T&E mechanism in single shot mode with a mounted scope on it in Viet Nam.

The Canadian sniper was not using a standard issue .50 round. What he was shooting had a Hornady bullet with the round made for snipers.

I find out a lot on the AK files forum which I go to when ever I am on line and they seem to be a day or 2 ahead of the other places. As for trusting the news I'll trust Fox and reports by Tucker and Hannity long before I will ever trust CNN MSNBC etc etc. At least on fox you stand at least a 50% chance it is correct and one CNN and MSNBC etc you stand a 99% chance it is wrong

10 seconds is a mistake. Bullet Speed is 2800 ftpsecond. 5 seconds flight time, max. So a lot of luck was involved as you can move 20' in 5 seconds strolling along.

If the bullet traveled 11616 feet, it would be very slow to take 10 seconds. Could this be correct? Or did the bullet have to be fired at such an arc that it traveled much more than 11616 feet?
