Saved some hay today

Long but rewarding day here in Southwestern Pa...hay and equipment in the barns and no one is too worse for the wear.

Woke up this morning at 5am to rain and listened to it rain for 2 hours straight. Thought the hay was gone - but took a shot anyway since we had to get it off the field. Tedded it, raked it, turned the
windrow, tedded it, and raked it one last time before baling tonight. Gave the ground and the rows time to dry in between. Not much sun today but there was a light breeze and it was in the 80's. Never
would have thought we had chance but it's dry and in the barn now. If we hadn't had the tedder (just bought it two years ago) there is no way we would have had a chance. We had a day and a half of drying
before the rain came this morning and I think that made a big difference too.

Hope everyone else's hay season is coming along well.

Here are some photos from a few weeks ago when the weather was better and we had some time to pause and snap some photos. My daughter was even helping on top of the stack!

Thanks,
Jameson

I have found that a steady continuing rain like that can make hay really settle down into the stubble making it difficult for the tedder to pull it out. I resorted to raking then tedding then raking again. Good job!

People who think they don't need a tedder have either never used one or don't live in the "wet" zone.

Yeah, wouldn't it be nice to just throw the switch on the irrigation pump off and have the moisture just settle down through the ground?

Same conditions here, I tedded twice and raked about 4:30 started round baling after 6:30. Everything looked good for the first three rounds made 20 bales and dropped left side of pickup head into hole and found a big flint rock I must have pulled up with Moco.
Parts were easy to take off, but beyond repair, (I tried) I can pick up parts Sat AM at Deere dealer. It's raining hard here and not supposed to stop until tomorrow. Glad I went back and tedded the windrows on the remaining 6 acres of timothy, that's now mulch.

"People who think they don't need a tedder have either never used one.........". That was me till half a dozen years ago out of 40 trying to
learn how to farm. I had never heard of one and noticed the ads in ASC seasonal sale catalogs. Decided to get one and things haven't
been the same. It saved my hay crop again this year.

Actually on one cutting in one field, same as having an extra wagon to get that last load up.

I just bought my first tedder this week - a little one - but it allowed me to get a field rolled up before this two day rain moved in. I never thought much about them, but a friend convinced me that they can be a valuable tool. I think I'm gonna like it.

I have a tedder and still can't get any hay made this year. Can't get two days in a row without rain and temps above 70*. Forecast is showing rain 6 out of the next 10 days and temps in the 50's and 60's. Between the heavy dew, rain, and ground moisture I can't even get the hay dried down enough to wrap it for baleage.

I an 73 now and have never been without a tedder when was farming. What I grew up with was the New Idea 3 bar rake-tedder the was built from about 33 to 47 when they went to the 4 bar model. Some time in the early 4 bar model time or possibly earlier time Grandpa desided that 3 bar was wore out so traded it on a New 4 bar Deere that was rake only. Not shur just how lokg he had that Deere but it was still very new when we got a wet year with hay on the ground that we could not get dry,When that hay was laying in winrow wet he went back to dealer and traded that new Deere back in on a 4 bar rake-tedder from New idea and we had that rake untill quit hay. I now rebuild rakes for the Amish and that New Idea rake-tedder built from late 40's to mid 50's is the most desireable rake out there and I just cannot find enough of then for demand.
