in reference to the sweaty carb question below; is this the same problem that was one of the limitations for carburated aircraft to fly at high altitudes? I read WWII history and there is reference to fuel systems freezing, similar thing?
 
Yup. Some aircraft engines have electrical or mechanical heating systems to counteract the problem.

My dad's old 1947 JD B used to have icing problem. Dealer finally ended up installing a hotter manifold.
 
That is why the small aircraft use carb heat on landing. It says when needed on this check list for landing but I was instructed to use it on every landing. Throttle back then carb heat.

Soloed in 1973 in a Cessna 177. First dual cross country was into Detroit Metro. Sold Cessna 177 in 1976 and have not flown solo since.
 
A lot of people were afraid of them in the beginning because of the flying tail. My first instructor wanted to land hot. The second instructor said what is this all about the first time out when he wanted me to call out what I was doing as I did it. When calling out 60 over the fence he said do a go around and I'll take the controls and he went over the fence at 50. Made a big difference. Slowing down that much let it land like a glider. I did most of my flying taking and picking up mold or machine parts for the factory I worked for. Very little actual pleasure flying even though every minute in the seat was a pleasure.
 
You are correct! Being 79 and 40 years from doing it has caused much more than that to become confused! :)^D
