Livestock water tank fixes?

Have a 75(?) gallon poly Freeland Industries water tank that my wife's horse put a 4" gash in the bottom. Is there a fix worth trying on this or should I junk it and buy another? Epoxy type sealer maybe? It's not an actual hole, but enough that the water leaks out.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you can get hold of a chunk of the same black polly plastic, cyou can use a good soldering gun to do a welding job. Must be clean and dry. Not a simple job but can be done. Also check out Harbor Freight. They sell one sonething like a hot glue fun but it is for polly. Hope this helps.

IF the bottom is fairly flat then just make a patch out of a piece of metal to cover the hole. Then clean the tank and plate up. Put a good bead of silicone around the hole and put the metal patch over it. Then drill some through holes and bolt the pats solid.

I have fixed many plastic/fiberglass tanks this way.

see if any of your local body shops hsve the new nitrogen shield gas plastic welder. it really does the job. they run three to five grand for the welder.

JD Seller had my idea. Use (2) pieces of stainless about 1/8" thick with about 1" overlap (or more) in each direction. Use silicone or pieces of rubber inner tube as gaskets on both sides. Drill holes through, use stainless nuts and bolts and assemble. The 2 pieces of metal will clamp over the break making a secure patch.

Josh NAPA used to have a kit to fix them. I fixed a 1500 gallon water tank that slid over into the tire while pulling it down the road on a trailer. Gash was 4-6 inches long and a inch or two wide. That was at least 20 years ago. Still holding today.

i fixed one with a fiberglass repair kit for a boat that i had around, its still holding 2 years after i fixed it

If it's poly, I would roughen the plastic around the hole on the inside and apply a patch using "Epoxy for plastic" and fiberglass cloth.

Haven't you seen the commercials of "Phil Swift" and his "Flex-seal tape?" Just kidding. I have heard about some people who are able to "weld" plastic. We had a crack develop on a 1300 gallon poly tank a number of years ago. We fashioned an inner and out galvanized steel plate to cover it. We caulked it thoroughly before placing the plate on, and then we bolted it through both plates. It worked well, but the poly tank had gotten brittle from sun exposure and age, too.
