I was browsing through the May edition of Hemmings Motor News and saw an auction listing for the Auctions America Auburn Spring Collector Car Auction last month. The unit was an International Harvester military M5 high speed tractor. Checking out the site I see that it was sold for $44,000 .... I haven't a clue whether those military units go regularly for that kind of money or not. Anyways, here is a link for some information from a bit of web surfing, interesting stuff.

As usual, if two people want it for their collection, it will sell for an inflated price.
 
If it is restored to original condition it is probably worth that figure. There aren't many out there any more.
 
Yes, who knows what kind of price things bring at auction? From some reading, looks like they were
essentially a towing vehicle for big guns and other equipment, etc. Man, that factory must have been busy
during the war when you think they were still making tractors and ag equipment at the same time as their
military contracts. Things were booming in the economy I guess.
 
The military had a bunch of vehicles in the war that I had never heard of until recently. Allis Chalmers made a M4 18 ton high speed tractor with a 817 cu Waukesha gas engine. They also made the M6 36 ton high speed tractor with two 817 cu Waukesha engines. The M4 is a beast, the M6 must have been awesome. The M4 engine had two big down draft carbs and had an 80 mile range on a 110 gallon gas tank. Figure out the mileage. I can only imagine what the M6 mileage would be.
 
Yes, and during the war, the German army used diesel for the most part. I think the US used gasoline
engines in everything. Not sure about the other allied forces.
 
The US probably wanted to stick with one fuel that was readily available. Less confusion with fueling vehicles too.
