Tire maintenance

Often times I see old tractors with tires that have plenty of tread but ate cracked badly. Is there any preventive maintenance that can be done to make sure this doesn't happen?

These guys are telling it like it is. There is nothing you can paint on them to extend the life. Keep them properly inflated and if storing for a long time jack them up and put the equipment on blocks if you can.

And when the tire gets to be in bad shape, replace it.
Last fall during harvest I had just weighed my empty grain truck at the elevator, pulled off the scale and got out of my truck to get the grain ticket. An old tilt-hooded Ford full of grain drove past me to get on the scale. Right as he drove past me, one of the rear duals blew with the bang of a .22 shell. Of course, the remaining companion dual couldn't handle the weight so it blew also, sitting right on the scale. I happen to glance over at the blown tires and they should have been replaced 20 years ago.
I just know the guy was lucky that it happened at 5 mph instead of the speed he was driving to get to the elevator.

Tires need to be used in order to keep them flexible. They get old, dry out and then crack. For long storage, I believe you need to take the weight off the tire and keep them out of the sunlight.

I also try to keep tires stored off the ground, keep the rubber and cords from absorbing moisture, I even place treated boards under them if I have to leave them outside. I put black tarps or covers or something on them, keep the sun off.

I store all my tractors, mowers and anything with a motor under roof out of the rain and sunlight. I think both damage tractors.

People in Florida put wheel covers on their RV, they claim UV rays damage tires.

After 12 years, I replaced the goodyear tires on my buick before I went on vacation. They still had tread, but tries looked a little cracked. I keep car in garage when not being use. So add age to list too.
