I think it means so you don't have to watch the meter to be sure it doesn't exceed your wallet.

I was staring across the street a few months ago while I was pumping gas. Ronnie was coming north across the intersection on the side street by the bank and post office. Somebody was coming south on Main Street and must have been watching him instead of oncoming traffic. She turned right in front of a car headed north. Tires squealed, the northbound car headed toward Ronnie before she got it straightened out. Ron kept walking like nothing happened. When the noise and excitement settled down,I hollered "A little weak in the knees Ronnie?". He grabbed his backside and said "I think I need to go home and change my pants.".

I clean the windows while pumping gas, they usually need it. At the station with a free tire pump I sometimes check the tire pressure before I leave.

LOL I knew what it meant. Just seems to me you are going to burn X amount so you may as well just fill it up.
