My girlfriend was driving a 97 Isuzu Rodeo with the 2.6 4 cyl when the radio died, then the air bag light came on, in a moment the
brake light, then the gauges started to fail, the lights were dimming, the rpms were racing out of control at idle, and then it
quit. It doesn't seem to be a mechanical issue. It seems like some sort of computer issue. Anyone ever experience anything like
this?
 
Yeah could be and sounds like a computer blew. Had a Subaru Outback that overheated real bad... As in almost caught fire.... When the car rolled to a stop and engine died every light came on the display.

Seen it happen in Nissan and another Subaru. Never good when all the lights come on.

Does it still turn over or maybe start? It really sounds like a battery, charging system problem or wiring. If battery and alternator test ok I would check the cables on battery and other ends, wiggle wires/connectors etc. Low voltage and loose connections can do things like you mentioned.
 
You may find that unplugging the wiring harness where ever there is a splice and inspecting the
pins for corrosion is helpful. Reassemble with Dielectric grease. Low voltage to the sensors causes
errors to be logged. Hope that helps
 
The alternator has a circuit that powers up the fuel pump relay. Swap the relay with another to test it. If that doesn't work, pull the relay, and jump power to the lead to the pump in the panel.

If the battery is dead I'm going with the alternator. Mounted low on the engine, it's a common failure point for anyone who sees much mud.

The computer also backs off the charging voltage under light load for fuel mileage.
