Bobcat 743b slow crank

I have a bobcat 743b that takes forever to crank the first time. The glow plugs are fine. It puts out black smoke for a minute or so after cranking. Any ideas? Thanks

Our BC used to be difficult to start, had the primer bulb, (factory I assume) the only way to get it to cold start was to keep squeezing the primer.

Come to find out the lift pump was not working. Once it started, it ran fine.

Replaced the lift pump, it is now the best starting diesel I have ever operated!

Doesn't sound like all the glow pugs are working, if one goes bad they are hard to start. Try cycling the glow plugs two, or three times before cranking it over see if that helps it start easier. Another thing is it could be getting low on compression. I have a 743B, plus I have worked on a few others over the years, most of the major work has been on the engines (loosing compression). They are good little machines, but I would like to repower one with a ad3.152 Perkins diesel.

How do you check the lift pump? Thanks

Thanks pt farmer. I may go ahead and replace all 4 glow plugs. They are tough little machines. I've owned mine for seven years and have used it a lot.

You check the lift pump just like a mechanical pump on a gas engine.

If it is like mine, there is a rubber line from the tank, to the lift pump, then from the lift pump to the injector pump.

Disconnect the line at the injector pump, crank the engine, the lift pump should produce a shot of fuel each time the cam cycles it through.

But, best to cap the fitting at the injector pump during the test. Don't want to get air in the system. Then purge the air from the line before reconnecting it with the primer.

Not sure if yours has the same engine, but as I said, it starts instantly when it is right. I've never tried to start it in really cold weather, but I have never had to use the glow plugs.

Thanks. I'll check that out. Mine has the kubota v1702 engine
