Daughter got a job at Clemson University she got a apartment that has a washer drier hook up. I am looking to buy something cheap to get her going. I am looking at Roper from lowe's the local store down there stocks 20 of'em...

Roper washer/drier combo $600 I can get 10 off that... What Y'all think...

I have a Kenmore I was going to repair a gear box is $200  I thought it had the tub you could replace the bearings and seals in for $50 but lucky me it has a gear box...

Thanks Steve it will also need a belt and who know's what else. Its a oil leakier oil all over the belt. It worked but had a bad bearing noise "grind/roor" on the spin cycle I told mom to not use it anymore and got her a speed Queen...When I replaced it, it had puked oil on the floor.... Maybe I should have waited till it burned the house down and sue'em...

Used dryers and top loader washers are very reasonable. At graduation time college towns have a lot of turn over due to people moving out of town. Have her check the local Craig's List and the college on-line ads. You can always buy her a brand new set later. Lowes and many stores will deliver and install for free or close to it.

At $1.50 per load for a laundromat washing machine and $0.50 per cycle for a laundromat dryer times two dryer cycles per washer load works out to $2.50 per washer load. Two loads per week is $5 per week. $600 will do laundry at a laundromat for 120 weeks or about 2 years and 4 months.

Just my take on this , if you can afford to buy the new washer/dryer combo , that is
what I would do .Your daughter is still going to need clean clothes after school is
over and she can take them to her new home , or sell them to some one else . Either
way , her laundry needs will be trouble free while at school .
At the same time ,use washer/dryers , often sell very cheaply . I bought a set from
a couple that bought a home that came with washer/dryer , and they where top load
washer/ front load dryer , and they wanted front load washer, with a matching dryer,
give me strength . Who cares if they match ? Anyway , my son was in need , and for
$150.00 I set him up .

Hobo,
I think you will find Kenmore, whirlpool, may tag, roper and a few others are
the same company. I had a whirlpool from lowes go bad in less than two years.
Lowes extended warranty gave me a full refund, which I could only spend the
money at Lowes.

Look underneath the washer and you will see they are all the same, all have a
bearing problem in transmission.

The only washer I could find that was different was the GE. Highly recommend
paying the extra and getting an extended warranty. I like the GE, it's faster,
you set the water levels, and the lid doesn't lock. It also has manual, not
digital, timer. I did have a service call on GE, switch went bad. Service call
was covered under extended warranty. I by the 5 year warranty.

As for dryers, I still like the whirlpool, They have been made the same way
for as long as I can remember.

When it comes to appliances, I like Lowes free set up and delivery. Don't
think they will go out of business like sears and HH gregg. Lowes extended
warranty pays off, no hassle. One service call costs more than the warranty.
geo.

I would recommend buying the new ones, they will probably last her a long time. Laundromats don't seem like the safest places in the country, and at home you can wash cloths while doing other things.

Ropers are a decent washer and drier just plain. Would also look at hotpoint. measure the size and check
the space you have available. Found out when installing for lowes that the units have gotten bigger over
time.

(quoted from post at 20:04:02 05/23/17) At $1.50 per load for a laundromat washing machine and $0.50 per cycle for a laundromat dryer times two dryer cycles per washer load works out to $2.50 per washer load. Which is just about how long the Roper washer and dryer will last before giving trouble.

I am 15 minutes from Clemson. Graduated there and retired from there. Let me know when you are in the area also.
Used to be a great little college town, but gone crazy now.
My email is always open.

One more thing, our repair man makes service calls and is VERY reasonable. He says if you buy a new machine, get the simplest one possible without all the electronic garbage on it. He says the older ones are easy to fix and the fancy newer ones are about cheaper to replace than fix.

buy her a new one for the apartment. Don't have to worry about some clown in the laundry bothering her. If you are not close get ext warrentee for a few bucks.

Yep it would... Her water bill is a straight $75 a month may as well get the most you can for your money...

Wow!!!!! I live in the upstate of SC and have a house and a pool.
My water bill avgs $26.00 a month. she must be paying for the whole bldg.
Living in Clemson proper is more expensive, but $75 a month is way over kill.

(quoted from post at 18:45:45 05/24/17) OT for the post, but theres a few of us in the area. Give us a holler when you come visit.

Sure would like to find her a decent place to live a apartment is around $750.00, water $75, $300 a year for her haft pint dog. Then electric bill etc... Life's a beach as they say...

I understand $300 for the dog I should have thought about that when she lived in one of my houses...

Probably will need to locate a good mechanic... are A man with plenty of money to keep her up  She will be living in Anderson SC. She has been a lifer 7 years of collage and traveled the world all across the USA, Canada, Europe and Africa... She taught special needs in public a High school for a couple years she could not handle it. Working in a collage environment is were she wants to be working with freshman and foreign students. She got the job but the pay sure shucks... Go Tigers :!: I am going to move her June 3rd a one day trip. I look after my 90 year old mom I don't think I could find anyone that could put up with her for more than a day she's a handful.

What kind of car of does she drive? My mom lives in Anderson, and I can ask her. The yhave 2 mechanics. Ones a foreign car
specialist, the other is a great general mechanic. My step dad takes his Nissan to the one, moms Buick and their Chevy pickup to
the other.

01 Honda accord a good wrench should feel at home working on it. Its up to date on all service other than any issues at 200K it could have. She has AAA platinum. I can tell rite fast if he's the real deal I just got to find him  She needs to locate a good wrench and build a relationship and not wait till her OX is stuck in a ditch...

She can check/add her own, coolant etc I need a second set of eyes its not gonna be a quick lube

Have had to do a few things at laundronat that my Maytag was not big enough for. The small unit at the mat took 11 quarters or $2.75 per load, the larger that I needed to use took 13 quarters or $3.25 per wash load. So your figures are about half of actuall load costs on wash. Did not use the dryer. It would have been over $5.00 per load wash and dry.

When I die she can put a claimer my SQ :D Till then she will just have to settle for a cheap washer/drier and her life time warranty on her car.... I told her if she got out of the AAA towing range her warranty was VOID...

She made a run to Anderson Monday and a tire blew out it was a 6 year old Michelin that is about haft worn out. I had told her we would have to replace them soon because of there age. She posted it on Facebook a pix with her standing by the tire. Her aunt said I should have checked them before she made the run to SC she told her I did and told her they were aging out. Then she came back and said I should have replaced them BEFORE THEY BLEW OUT.

I replied back I HAVE BROUGHT EVER TIRE SHE HAS EVER ROAD ON AND WORN OUT DO YOU THINK THAT WAS SOON ENOUGH...

I felt bad about the blow out my gut told me to suck it up and replace them... AAA and a Walmart close by she's riding on new rubber...

Foothills Imports, you can google them, is where my stepdad takes his Nissan, swears by them. He says they do it all there, and a very fair on prices.

Thanks, YT and you guys, this is part of why this place is so great! Insider experience from the outside!! Awesome!!

Place in Anderson called First Class H.A.L.T. is supposed to be a first class repair shop for Honda, Acura, Lexus, Toyota cars. They have pick up and drop off and a nationwide life time warranty on any repairs.

Thanks for the leads I would like to find a small independent guy off the beat"n path... I am not sure I would take it to a guy that works on euro cars Honda's are not in that class and don't need a import specialist they are simple more simple than most domestic cars... If it had a major failer I would go get it are have AAA tow it 200 miles and pick it up from there.

I would let someone do a starter, alternator, basic service are just check it over etc... I am a 3K oil change guy and a quick lube ain't gonna do it. I want a good trained set of eyes not a lube tech...

Update got her moved Saturday. I would like to have had the time to get together with the guys that ask me to let me know when I was coming it means alot to me. I had to go to Greensboro move her stuff out load it up and haul arse to Anderson. By the time I got her moved in hooked up her washer and drier attempted to hang a curtain it was time to get the ell out of there. Anderson has it going on looks like they have all the big franchise stores. Lowe's rocks there I got a washer and drier and all the hook up stuff fast and on my way. Note to myself "take a hand truck next time you move someone"...

Its tuff to leaving your daughter 4/4-1/2 hour's away knowing there's not much you can go if she needs you. It could be worst she could be in California.

Thanks again maybe one day we can get together.. Go Tigers...
