Computer question

Reading the responses to Geo's control function post, it occurred to me that there is a lot of computer knowledge on here. So here's my problem: I do a lot of form-type documents in my business, and set them up using a function where you put a little gray box wherever you want to put in new information (name, date, etc.). To do a form, you started at the top of the document, hit F11, and it would take you to the first box. Put in the info, F11 again to get to the next box, and so on. The problem is, my computer crashed when the power went out, and I lost that function. I do remember it was hard to find when I got my new computer- it had become a "legacy" feature. But now, I can't find it at all. Does anybody know how to get to it, so I can put it on my tool bar again?

Can't speak for others, but your post is a little vague for me. Need to better understand what it is that's happening - such as, are the grey boxes only in one program, like a database? What OS are you using? Might even need to know how old your PC is.

My memory ain't the greatest(!!), but I know in Windows 7 that you can use the Tab button to advance from box to box. And this makes me ask, is your OS older, such as XP, or even earlier? ....DO YO STILL USE DOS?!?!? *lol* Just kiddin' ........or AM I?

Eh, don't mind me - just woke up. And as I wrote in another thread, I don't drink coffee! :p

coshoo,

Google: Create a fillable form and you should get a link to MS Support instructions...
BUT they might be referring to form that can filled-out, then submitted ONLINE. Not sure.

Says you need to show the Developer tab:
File
Options
Customize Ribbon - in the list under Main Tabs, select the Developer check box, and click OK.

Then it gives more instructions as to how to use the Developer tab's tools to do what I think you wish to do.
Also mentions Building Blocks

This is in Word 2010, and I'm using Windows 7 Pro. I think SweetFeet is onto something- Its kind of coming back to me now- I need to print out her response so I can have it in front of me, and see what I can figure out. I think I just need to get Developer onto my ribbon. Thanks!

I guess I'm wondering out how others do "fill in the blanks" form letters and documents without that obscure feature. . .

If a form is used to "record" data in MSWOrd, then you might consider creating a table to store the data.

A form is basically a "new" record with fields inserted from the table.

These fields are displayed in various locations on the form.

As mentioned above by [b:654c4848f0]kcm.MN[/b:654c4848f0], the [b:654c4848f0]TAB[/b:654c4848f0] key is generally used to navigate from one field to another in a table, form, or querie.

Once all the data is input for one record and the [b:654c4848f0]TAB[/b:654c4848f0] key is pressed, then the record is saved and a new record appears with blank/empty fields.

Tables are the foundation of a database.

Queries are created from tables.

Forms are created from tables and queries.

Reports are created from tables and queries.

Tables, forms, queries, and reports are automated and managed by macros.

Hope this helps.
