What can be done to a D282 to give it more hp besides a turbo? Can u take the sleeves out and put D301 pistons in? Would getting a different head help? If so what head? Mine is from a 560. Any input will be great.

Not really much. To answer your questions no on both .. Air and fuel equal more hp. Thing is the original version of that thing is about wrung out all it will stand over time. I have see folks turn the fuel screw and get more rpms but first thing you know head gasket blown or rod out the side of the block.

just put the 660 injection pump on it, but why do need more power?? you will go from 1800 to 2400 rpm. i never run my 660 at full throttle anyhow so curious what your up to.

Heres a couple of hard running D-301 powered IH pullers back in 1975...The top one is the Merit Royalty tractor out of Ohio with CC Combs driving..The bottom one is Charlie Hagedorns tractor out of Barnes,KS with Dale Rothlisberger driving..I think the Royalty tractor had an inline pump and twin turbos...

lots more to pulling than h.p. . and need that power to the ground. and type of pulling ?
myself i would get a 660 and go from there.

Yea they ran the D 301 , well that is where they started from and they went on up from there . The big problem is the heads ya can only force feed so much air thru small intake . Then your fighting the fact that you only have a 4 main bearing block . And now today you are bucking up against better engines that can breathe . then your always fighting against the guy that has the bottomless check book .

You will be pulling (at least in Southern Il) against 700 cu inch 460's. Won't do much good with a small block diesel. Unless you pull 3 to 4 mph in a top cut class. But a gas motor will be ok. Make them 400 cu. Truck head etc.

Schroll on down to the pulling page. Ask there. Also find a copy of the Hook magazine. Lots of Ads. Google them.

Transfer sled and dead weight, I have a 660, with a 560 282 in it. Haven't weighed it yet but it has the bigger planetaries, I'm just thinking since it weighs so much it will need more power to compete with the tractors that are real suped up

pretty vague, as the 660 is pretty much at the end of the antique tractor pulling line competing with the J.D. 830's , case 930's . the 660 does pretty good. you dont run out of power with them, as you will spin out first.
