I want to import some tractor parts and
implements and engines. Can I pick up the load
myself? Has anyone had any experience or knowlege in
importing? My email is open.

Do not import but pick up stuff often at the New Orleans docks.

If you are bringing in a entire container load you will be allowed to pick up your container with the right clearance.
IE: You need a TWIC card to even get on the property.

If you are bringing in pallets of stuff it will be unloaded and put into a warehouse while it goes threw customs.
We pick up everything we haul with only a pickup number so anyone can do it.
Some of our warehouses face the street so no TWIC card is needed but if the warehouse is inside the port you still need the right clearance to get on the property.

Your import broker should help you with customs and setting up pickup by your designated carrier that could be yourself.

Do they still have an escort service for non twic card holders or has that been canceled now? You used to be able to get escorted to the location of loading and then back out for a fee not sure what that was. Just know it was in lieu of having a twic card.

Thanks to John and Catapillar guy.
I hope that the Los Angeles port has warehouses where I can load without going into the port.
Is it necessary to have an import broker? How much do they cost?

There is no law that forces you to use a customs broker.
People bring stuff across the Mexico and Canada border every day with out using one.
But when you start importing from overseas; dealing with warehouse storage; having all the I's dotted and the T's crossed on the pile of paper work; and the fact that most that ship in threw sea ports are bringing in quantities that require bonding to make sure the feds get their customs payments; it sure makes it a lot easier to use a customs broker.

Want to try and go it alone.
