Farmall 966 Clutch?

Farmall 966, 5 year old clutch, needed adjustment bad, So i adjusted it, gave it a half inch of freeplay at the floor board to where you can jiggle it with your fingers. when i start place my foot on the pedal and apply just a tiny amount of pressure on it, (not even enough to push it down), i can feel a little pulsating type of feeling. when i press it down, I have to press the clutch all the way down to the floor pretty much before the clutch will disengage to be able to shift. like i cannot shift it unless the pedal is completely pressed to the floor, yet i have the correct amount of free play on the clutch pedal. how do you adjust the little fingers or what ever inside of the inspection cover under clutch housing?

Sounds pretty close to right. Never had a TA to deal with. They are like cement either going out or will go out. So if I have them apart I just do a delete on them. Never missed them. Either can pull it or can't.

I normally like what you contribute. Why would you bad mouth the TA system, having never had one. They work for long hours and provide a major way to be productive in difficult conditions. Jim

The clutch fingers (and the pivot points they use to do their job) are likely worn to the point of no usability. It needs to be replaced. Jim

Pulsating is caused by uneven fingers. Some times the pin on pivot of finger comes part way out so look at them. If it has the button on end of fingers, one may have come loose, common . Some buttons are staked so tight they cannot come loose, others are not. The clutches with adjusting screws at pivots are easier to adjust. If fingers are worn, bets are off. I have adjusted a lot of them over the years to get them nice and even. Takes some dinkering around as I use a long light feeler gauge, rope on clutch pedal and go at it . Then when you get them even , if possible, turn engine a third of a turn and recheck. If they changed, you have more problems, like worn out release bearing carrier.

Well the real free travel is 5/8th of and inch and the rest of the adjustments BY THE BOOK were fine when they were NEw, NoW they are extremely field tested and every point on the tractor has ware and the BY THE BOOK does not work out well . . Now like Pete said you may have finges not setting even , ya may have a damper spring that came out and now wedged in the pressure plate , ya may have slipped the clutch a bit tomuch . . Drop the inspection cover off that have a look . Do like Pete said with the rope trick ( myself i have never done that as i usually have someone standing around watching and have them do the clutch pushy thing for me) .

I'd be lost without my TA. Our two big tractors growing up were an 856 and a 966. We never put a TA in either one. That 966 had a hairpin clutch though. It would just about rip off your head from day 1.
