I found out yesterday that one of my good friends has ALS that is advancing. He is 2nd generation construction contractor, great cabinetmaker, archery instructor and family man. His step father passed away from ALS a couple of years ago, another neighbor of mine has it very advanced.

Just venting, I am missing him already.

ALS is a tough disease...very degenerative over time. I lost a cousin from that about 20 years ago...he was 48yo. He was actually a double first cousin...his mom and dad were sis/bro of my mom and dad. I remember how he was carried by his older brother into a stadium for a religious revival program......reminded me of the adv for Boy"s Town...he ain"t heavy, he"s my brother. I had 92 first cousins....he was in my top 3...also a Nam vet, USN. Just a wonderful person. Tragic demise.

My wife has had it for 13 years. It is a horrible disease. She has no movement from the neck down. She runs a computer with a dot on a pair of glasses. She still has a good outlook on life. You make a lot of changes is your life to make it work.

My cousin got it, killed her in under a year. Watched Alzheimer's kill my father in law. Both some of the best people you'd ever want to meet. Still can't figure out which disease is worse. Our prayers are with you.

We lost a very good and dear friend to it in 2010. His greatest fear always was that he would suffocate from his muscles not working to make him breathe. The whole family suffered while watching him go downhill. He and his cousin both had it. Maybe it is a family genetic thing?

My brother was a weapons chief on the A10 Wart Hog.He started having problems and was told it was from ALS. Caused by the Ammo the A10 uses. It is now known as the Agent Orange of the gulf war.He was dead six moths after he was told about it.I have learned that all of his crew now has problems with ALS or is dead.

I know there are other causes for it. Just a shame people died when they didn't have to.

Oh, man, that hurts. Had a cousin back in '93,'94?? that was diagnosed with ALS and lasted maybe six months. She was only 44 IIRC and left a 20 something year old daughter, parents and two brothers. I feel for you and for the friends' parents/siblings, etc. May God watch over him in the days ahead.

Oh my God! That has to be the worst way in the world to die. My wife took care of a friend in her home until her husband couldn't handle her alone at night anymore, then we took her in here. She passed away in her recliner right here in our living room. It's just excruciating to see somebody waste away like that.

(quoted from post at 22:48:09 05/11/17) And somehow Stephen Hawking manages to have survived for 30 years or so with ALS. Go figure.

I believe Hawking has a rare slow progressing form of the disease.
