Question for old

old, you've often recommended filling the valve train and cylinders with ATF. I put 8 quarts of ATF into my 1963 6 cyl IHC truck today. It has been sitting for about 20 years and the engine is stuck. I also dropped the pan and put a floor jack with a pipe under the front rod (still connected to the crank) and I applied some pressure.
How much ATF do I need to use? As I said, it is a 6 cyl engine. It says 150 gross hp and 130 net and has overhead valves.
Any other suggestions? Thanks, Kelly P.S. The other day I teased you about my Farmall 460 engine. Would that engine fit into the truck?

While you have the plugs out look inside with a mag lite so you can see the walls and if they are rusty nothing will break them loose you will need to tear the engine down.

You want to fill each cylinder full...some like a mix of ATF and acetone to have it penetrate even better..

Papa, I doubt that he managed to get six quarts into one cylinder.

Don't worry Kelly, no doubt young fella Old will be along soon with more of his tricks. As he has freed up hundreds of stuck motors in his relatively short life, and none have taken over a week, He will certainly enable you to get yours freed up by the end of the day.

I've had better luck with a MIXTURE of ATF,,,,,,,,,,,,Diesel Fuel,,,,,,,,,and Brake Fluid. All of these type of fixes are as old as the hills and I heard of and tried them FIFTY years ago, THIS IS NOTHING NEW OR A MAJOR DISCOVERY!!!!!!!!!!

I remove the plugs and fill the cylinders (to the extent possible subject to engine and valves etc),,,,,,,,,,,,Let it set n soak and brew for some time,,,,,,,,,,,,,,refill,,,,,,,,,,,,,,start rocking n shocking n turning (no hard dead turn/pull) to see if she frees up.

NOTE so often if its stuck badly, while the above may unstick it, theres more serious damage that needs fixed right and this may be a band aid approach. However if its only a minor "stick" Brake Fluid and Diesel Fuel and ATF etc may get her going

Hope this helps

PS in addition to brake fluid or diesel or ATF Ive heard of all other sorts of other witches brew that people have used. Hope other gents will add what they used???????????

Hope it's ok to add my two cents. I'm old, just not Old.

Recently I used rustolum rust remover to remove rust from lawn mower carb. I soak carb for 30 minutes. Rust vanished. Didn't bother aluminum.

If all else fails, I would try using it.

Geo-TH: What does that stuff look and smell like. I've been using Evapo-Rust and suspect it's the same thing. Same jug, different label. Never tried it on aluminum and it's not good as a penetrant.

Evaporust is primarily a chelating agent called EDTA. It comes in powder form. The manufacturer that I work for buys it in 100 lb drums for use as a raw material in various cleaning chemicals that we make. Maybe I should look into packing it in 50lbs and sell to TSC for you guys to buy, so that everybody can have 25 gallons for the price of five.

On that engine I would pull each plug out fill the cylinder as full as I could and then pour as much ATF into the carb as I could and let it sit. On that unless it has a vertical exhaust you cannot fill the exhaust system like I would on a tractor but you can do the carb. I would not have pull the oil pan but since you did if you can put a piece of card board or other such thing under the engine and watch for it to turn a red color form the ATF seeping past the rings. I just did a 1950 8N ford a few weeks back and it had been under water and locked up. I pulled the oil pan drain plug and set a pan under it to catch any oil/ATF that would come out. In less then a week the mixture in the pan was turning red. So I set a 12 volt battery in it and started using short fast taps on the starter button and she popped free and I have been using it ever since

well as far as im concerned with seized engines you need to take them apart.i just removed the head on a w6 tractor last week end that was stuck, hone the rust out cleaned the cyl's nice, blew it all out with air as best i could along cyl and piston.put ATF 1 inch above pistons. i will see this weekend and also let you guys know what has happened. this is all a crock to me! but im going to prove it like the myth busters.! i also removed the oil pan and it was full of sludge. oil pick up screen was mostly plugged also. so i dont get how adding atf to the cyl's automatically free's up your engine and away you go,... ha ha ha. i can see myself removing the sleeves with pistons and peeling them off. and replacing sleeves. how come some people have all the luck??? as it dont work for me.
