Local Public Service

Well-known Member
I know that many here serve their towns and other local governments. I got an email from my local fire department yesterday indicating that I am a member, again. I was a member for 35 years and then discharged for insubordination by the new chief eight years ago. A number of others left in the following months. Well, that chief got fired by the town select board a year ago. I was asked to come back, and since then a number of those who left are back on. I finally applied a few weeks ago, now I am back and at 68 years old I am by far the oldest member. I don't think that I will be putting the air pack on any more though. Maybe I will train with it though just to stir the pot a little, LOL. I served on the town select board for nine years, and budget committee for fifteen. I have been a member of the trustees of the trust funds for sixteen years. What is your current and past local service?

I spent 10-12 years as a ski patrolman, life guard, fireman/EMT. Spent over 20 in LE and now serve as a Town Councilman. I figure if you're gonna complain, you'd better man up and serve so you can try to change what you gripe about.

I was on the Volunteer Fire & Rescue for 15 years. I was a EMT & Chief for most of those years. Even though were are a small rural community we are 2 miles from I-80 & were keep very busy. I have served 4 terms as City Councilman & have been active in Tomorrows Leaders Today.

I have served on several town boards and as a constable for over 30 years.
I'm starting to think about slowing and taking it easy at this time.

I've been on Township Board of Review for 21 years. Chairman for most of those years. I've slowed down. That's all I do anymore. I was real active in Michigan Milk Producers Association. President of the Dairyland Local, was on the District 5 Nominating Committee and State Resolutions Committee. Going way back to high school,I was active in FFA. Served as chapter president in my senior year.

I enjoy those things, but I've about had my fill.

In my community its friends and family only
people are told not to come to public
meetings. I've joined several groups
fighting mega dairies and surprising the
majority fighting are farmers also worked
with several grazing groups did a lot of
religious education work . But the most
rewarding to me is helping others i do it
quietly and with as little fuss as i can .I
always believed that the best gifts given
are the ones you don't plan on a reward. One
of the best gifts i found to give is time i
always made time to stop and talk with older
people who no one has time for anymore stop
at the cemetery for those who have no one to
look after them anymore. I have several that
are starting farming on i just recently gave
a hay rake to he was having a bad day he was
tired when i figured out his problem and it
made him happy. A second one i gave a corn
crib and alot of fencing stuff to it makes
things easier when starting i know i been
there.

Never actually belonged to the local fire department but I have donated many hours of
time, working on their trucks and equipment. Friend of mine and myself bought and donated a
set of Jaws of Life to them. We have a great vol fire and rescue in our town.
I spent several years on the county solid waste authority, am on the planning commission
and the economic development committee.Probably would run for county commission if I were a
little younger.

Town councillor 3 terms, fire department 8 years, lodge chair 8 years, museum board 3 terms. The most rewarding and enjoyable things were lodge and museum work. Unc

In 1980 I organized a local group to create an awareness of a "land grab" by the MN DNR, to control wetlands. Their program was passed in the wee hours of the legislative session, and provided no legal notice requirement to landowners. Of course, it allowed trespassing by DNR to establish photo evidence. Next year was Vice Chairman of a County group that fought the State in establishing a burial site for hazardous waste. We formed a state-wide coalition of groups, lobbied at the Capitol, etc. for our own sponsored measures. Pushed for reduce, reuse, recycle. For 11 years, was in a local play group that performed for Developmental Achievement clients and local youngsters at Christmastime. Knights of Columbus member since 1967, held multiple leadership roles in two Councils over the years.

I spent a number of years as a watershed commissioner. My friends would say " A what?" I thought everyone knew what a watershed commission did.

Forty years as a vol. firefighter chief and asst. chief. I belong to the R-crew (retired). The R crew consists of a 72 year old, a 68 year old and me a 67 year old. We respond to all the day calls as staffing is limited during the day. Two of us are apparatus drivers.

Twelve years crewing the ambulance.

Twenty five years on church board of trustees.

I have been on the local Farm Bureau BOD for twelve years and still try to stay a bit active in 4H for the kids. I have been a
Mason for 37 years and a Past Master of my lodge, and am currently one of the lodge trustees. I have also been in the local fire
company for 54 years and have served as a driver, officer and was an officer on our two county Firemen's Association for about
five years. I am still somewhat active in hte fire company, and am an active Fire Policeman. But, at 69, I am slowing down and
slowly dropping out of things. It just gets tougher as age creeps in....

I am on the Zoning Board and Dilapidated houses board. Volunteer for most activities such as Christmas decorating, 4th of July activities, Thanksgiving, etc. Also help build ADA ramps for people in the area. We usually let them pay for materials, sometimes the Civitan Club or Methodist church will pay for materials. Labor is a requested donation of whatever they can give to the volunteer fire department. Cash, food, or whatever.

Rob, could you explain a little about the dilapidated houses board? I have never heard of one.

It's a new Board just formed. It concerns abandoned structures in disrepair that pose a threat to the population. Spread of diseases and such from vermin, fire hazard, etc. If the property owner will not correct the situation the Town can have the structure demolished and bill the owner. If they don't pay a lien will be placed on the property. Several layers of safe guards to insure a danger actually exist. The Board consist of 5 citizens, property must be referred to use by a separate 3 member inspection committee, and we have to refer it to the 7 member Town council for action. All require a majority vote to send it on down the line.

It is probably a good idea, in order to prevent a mistake or allegations of things like misuse of power, but it looks to me like your Town council is ducking responsibility.

I have been on the Board of Zoning Appeals in my Township for the last 5 years. 2 meetings as an alternate, 2 meetings as a member, and the last 4 years I have been the Chairman.....Railroaded all the way...I enjoy it tho'. We only meet when there is an appeal of the Zoning Inspector's finding. Usually only 3 or 4 a year...Going to have a meeting later this month, which will be the 5th this year.....Unusual, but I guess the economy is looking up and people are building things.
