96 f350 duel fuel tank help

My 96 f350 dump truck has two fuel tanks. I have never been able to use the rear tank in the six years ive owned it. If you flip the switch to
the rear tank the gauge needle pegs full and the truck quits. Being its a dump, i can access the tanks real easy. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks Chris

Gas or diesel?

If gas, there will be a pump in each tank. Select the rear tank, check for power to the pump. If there is power there, and no fuel pressure, the pump is bad

If diesel, a solenoid valve selects the tank. Follow the fuel lines, they will lead to the valve. The valve selects the tank and switches the gauge, I believe. Diagnosing the solenoid can be difficult without a wiring diagram, but typically, power to the valve selects the rear tank, remove power for the main tank. Just be careful and aware, the gauge wiring is also in the harness.

Possibly the tank is full is why the gauge pegs full. Or there could be a broken wire, shorted wire, bad sending unit.

Hi Chris,
Our 95 F150 has pretty much the same two tank system. Each tank has its own fuel pump. Rear one went out in ours, replaced with a new one from rock auto parts And good to go....Tom

The dual low pressure fuel pumps when energized open a flapper valve located midway on the frame. Where the lines go to. Sometimes this valve gets gunked up and will not "flap". If your rear pump has power and low pressure then it is the valve. Easy enough to take off and clean.

(quoted from post at 17:36:21 05/06/17) Thank you. It is gas and i thought maybe fuel pump. I will try that

Just FYI, I've been going through a similar thing on my 97 F350 gasser. You can buy the tank, fuel level sender and pump as an assembly for about the same, or less, than the pump alone!
