my uncle has a 64 ford 2000. he was using it one day and it died. since then he has had a couple of friends work on it. he has replaced just about everything. still will not start. this is where I came in. after looking at it I have set the points which were not opening. now have good fire. also took timing cover off and found timing gears are good and in time. carb is new and appears to be working fine. but still will not start.
HELP!!!

Yes say you have good spark but is it a good blue/white and jump a 1/4 inch gap or more at all the plugs and at the center wire of the cap. How good is the air suction at the intake of the carb? If you hold your hand over he air intake of the carb do you get a good strong suction and does you hand get covered wit hgas

You didn't say weather you had fire at the plugs or just at the points, if only at the points, most likely the condenser is bad.

If you have spark at the plugs, and still no start, pull the drain plug on the carb, be sure there is fuel in the carb bowl. Catch what comes out, make sure it is clean gas, not diesel or water.

Give it a small shot of ether. If it starts or tries to start then, then have nailed it down as a fuel problem regardless of the condition of the carb. You have good spark at the plugs? Pull one and ground the electrode and make sure have spark off of the anode. I'm not familiar with a Ford 2000 per say so I don't know what's the kill switch, but might look there since he was using it one day and it just died.

Good luck.

yes there is good spark which will jump a quarter inch and I took the plug out an with the plug wire still on it checked the spark again and it jumped about a quarter again.
also pulled the drain on the carb and had a good flow.

also has a good suction at the carb. it back fires through the carb and the exhaust at different times while trying to start it

jprice........ennytime you have starting issues, change yer sparkies. They've been FLOODED and CONTAMINATED with todays additive filled gasoline. Recommend AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025. Ya don't haffta throw them away, just clean'n'dry 'em, one-atta-time in HOT runnin' engine and save'um fer the next time. (and there will be a NEXT time)......HTH, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

If they changed all those parts without troubleshooting first it's hard to tell what is screwed up! If it is backfiring
out of both ends I would verify that the distributor is in right and the plug wires correct! You should of had a mechanic
work on it and not a couple of parts changers!

They may have replaced and fixed why it died in the first place but it Sounds to me like the plug wires got mixed up
good luck with it Byron

If its backfiring through carb and exhaust the timing is off or the plug wires are on wrong. Check firing order then find #1 on the cap and check rotation make sure the one thats firing
next is going to that cylinder if thats correct you dont have the points set right...

Now days the auto lite have gone the way of the champs and do not hold up well. Me I have since switched to the NGK3112 plugs and they work 1000% better then the old 437s do

So it had one original problem, plus an unknown number of other problems induced by his buddies' tinkering.

You fixed one problem, the mis-adjusted points, which may or may not be the original problem. I would first check that the plug wires appear to be in the right locations and order, although these tractors will run surprisingly well with two swapped plug wires.

A snort of starting fluid will prove whether or not it's just a fuel problem. Of course, everything else has to be more or less right for it to fire up on ether.

Has it been sitting long enough for one or more valves to stick open? That can cause the "backfire" issues you describe.

Friend of mine had a 2000 that did exactly the same thing. Quit dead while brush hogging.
Broke a camshaft. Did not find any other problems.Put a new cam in ,runs like a top.

Take a spark plug reading. You can tell a lot from them, running or not. Wet or dry, soot covered or clean, etc.
