550 Oliver misses one hot

550 Oliver misses if it's been worked hard. Continues to miss even after you take the load off. I'm wondering if the spark plugs could do this? The plugs are new 386 autolites and the manual calls for autolite BT?8. The cross reference shows several different substitutions including the 386. It was still missing when I parked it and pulled the plugs. You can see by the photo that they're kind of white instead of tan. Wonder too hot to plug could be causing the problem? Also any suggestions on a different plug would be appreciated.

Just checked it and it was a bit lean so thanks for the suggestion I'm going to try it a bit richer.

Plugs look fine.

Be instead looking for a temperature-related issue with the ignition coil, ballast resistor (if it has one) and the breaker points. Point gap too small or a badly worn distributor bushings can cause random missing when the engine gets hot, both under load and unloaded.

I may have found the problem. The load mixture screw has a very large head and turns very easy. I'm thinking it may be turning itself in as I'm using the tractor. I know I turned it out over one turn before I used it. Manual says approximately 1-5/8. When I checked it now it was only open about a half a turn. I marked it and I'll check it after I use it again next time. Thanks for the replies.

If a plug fails while appearing to be fine, changing to a different cylinder can determine if it is the plug or not. and if the misfire does not follow the plug, it indicates a different issue. possibly a wire, or cap/rotor, or points adjustment as noted. If you do not know which cylinder was missing, or which plug came from which cylinder, it is a moot point. I would put them all back and start it. I would use a spark plug wire pliers, or insulated pliers, to pull them off one at a time to find the cylinder that misses. Jim

Put a small spring under the head of the load screw, or tighten the packing nut to prevent turning.
Jim.

Adjust the carb like you plan to, but you may want to put a condenser in it. My Super 55 started missingnunder load one year, then it started to miss all the time. Then it got to where it would only idle. Ended up being the condenser.
