Patching cast iron

We have outdoor wood stove that has a small crack in the door. What would be the best way to fix? I've checked companies website, they don't offer a door for replacement. TIA

Any time I had a welding task that was exotic to any degree and needed to be right I took it to a reputable welding shop. gm

KB.........BRAZE is the approved patching method fer cracked cast iron. Use oxy-acetylene, NOT arc-welding. Grind and "V" the crack some.........HTH, the amazing Dell

If you braze a stove door, it will probably melt out. It probably can be welded, although sometimes the quality of cast iron used in stoves won't weld very good. Good luck.

This is my thought too. I would heat it to 500 deg or so then weld it with nomacast rod. If you have it you could gas weld it too, but I've never done that. On th at poorer cast I've had much better luck with the nomacast that either buckle rod.

My experience is that stove/furnace parts are near impossible to weld. So be sure you have a plan B before trying plan A.

Cast is fickled to weld. You could have two doors from the same company with the same crack and one could weld easily and the other be your worst nightmare. If the stove is important to you take to a competent welder that knows how to weld cast. The metal will need to be pre-heated, nickel welded and cooled very slow.

I have a cast iron stillet, it has a small crack in it, I drill a small hole in the end of the crack and the crack has not gotten any bigger

not when heat is involved, brazing is useless. experienced welders have rod for cast. that is why they are journey men welders and know their stuff. anybody can play around with 7018 rod and some steel.the old saying ... qualified for the job.

When we used to weld the cast iron tandem hubs on Champion graders we made an oven out of brick and set the hub on charcoal and then covered it in charcoal and lit it. Once it got hot after about half a day in there, we welded it with nickel rod, then stuck it back in there and covered it with more charcoal. Let it burn out for a day or 2 to make sure it was cool, always worked well.
