Big Tex Vs. PJ dump trailer review

Well I hear Big Tex bought out PJ. I hope they don't cheapen up their trailers to match the BT. I sold my 07 PJ 14k dump and bought a new Big Tex 14K last December thinking they were pretty much a clone of a PJ...wrong. The Big Tex is pretty flimsy, the PJ had a horizontal channel running down the sides where the BT does not. May not be a big deal, but it rattles a lot more when empty. The BT takes a lot longer to dump, I think they went to a smaller pump. I was able to put a bigger battery in the PJ to increase battery capacity and cycle time, BT has the pump crowded close to the battery, so will have to move the pump if I want a bigger battery. The ramps on the BT are narrower and shorter! I feel like I am going to spin out loading my 6500# skidsteer....can't wait to do it in the rain :x Then when I get in the box with it it pops and creaks like something is flexing the wrong way. The doors for the ramps don't shut tight, so whenever I dump a load of gravel they fill up and I have to take the time to clean them out. Also the rear tie-downs are on the floor of the trailer, so whatever I am dumping gets hung up on them and more time to clean. The license plate position would have had the plate hanging below the frame (come on guys, it's a dump trailer and the frame dang near drags on the ground when you dump)....great engineering. I finally bent the handle that locks the swinging gates in the rear as you would smash your fingers every time you closed them. I almost lost the pivot pins that hold the tailgate on as they forgot to put cotter keys in them. The good? It has a 110 charge port, spare tire mount on the side and came with a roll over net cover that actually hooks on the rear.
Overall, I am disappointed...I expected more from a major manufacturer. Oh, and I finally got my $300 rebate from them after 5 months of waiting. Will have an update later on the 25 foot 14GN deckover that I also bought at the same time.

I would not recommend Big Tex trailers. My Brother had a goose neck and he had frame issues with it while it was under warranty. It was a fight to get any satisfaction from the company.

P&J has been a good brand for trailers. I owned a tilt bed one and it was fine for what it was.

Eldan,
Friend just bought a 14k load trail king
with a 12 ft bed to carry his bobcat. I
was impressed with how well it's made,
how fast it dumps, had a neutral or power
down. A little small for a second
battery. Scissor jack.
I would buy one if I needed to replace
mine.

I have a small Big Tex and love it. 3 yard, tandem axle. Dump time is fine. Battery
size? I never dump except when it is hooked to my truck so the truck's electrical
system charges the battery anyway. Model 70SR. When I firt got it and drove 50 miles
- one of the wheels started smoking. So I took that tire off and drove back home.
Ends up someone at the Dexter axle factory actually left out a Chinese bearing cone.
NO cone at all. It is amazing I got that far. Warranty was good and fast. Sent out a
whole new axle in two days and let me keep the old one. So far - I have moved 50
heaping loads of manure and gravel 80 miles a trip. Originally I was looking for a
cheap dump-truck but could not find one. I did not want a trailer but am now glad I
got it.

I bought a BigTex 3 years ago 14K 20 ft tilt. The paint was soft, painted over rust, deck lumber curled up and they used wire nuts to connect the wiring which lasted about 6 months. I would not buy another one.

Yes I am not impressed with the wiring on either trailer. The deck-over uses Romex running to the license plate????

I bought a Load Trail 14' 14,000 lb capacity dump trailer in 2014. I like it a lot, the best part being that it works great, pulls great and has very good quality in design and manufacturing.
