Massey 481 keeps quitting

Hi all, I am at my wits end. Last season my MF 481 would suddenly shut down while brush hogging my fields. At first I assumed it was a fuel or air starvation issue. It would slowly stall then shut down as if the fuel supply was being cut off. I checked the fuel pump, checked for vapor lock, replaced the fuel filter and even changed fuel with fresh. nothing worked. I sat on the tractor the following morning at attempted to start it. As the starter was spinning I could hear the engine wanting to start and eventually it did. I finished mowing the fields and I thought it was solved. But, the following outing I had the same experience. This happened 3-4 times. Finally at the end of the season I had the dealership service it and told them of the issue I was having. Upon delivery of my tractor it stalled coming off the trailer. They took it back and informed me that there was a bare wire that shorted out. Ok, so I finally got the tractor back again. I was discing my field when it happened yet again. I let it sit overnight and she started up the same as before; slowly. I called the dealership and was told that it has to be short. Meanwhile when I was returning to my barn I noticed the trans. filter restriction light was flashing. I called the dealership and was told that can't be it. I also checked the trans. fluid level and it was lower than the "min" mark on the stick. With only two hours on the machine after service, it's hard to believe that I lost that much fluid without noticing it.(something sounds fishy) I was told that all fluids were topped off and all filters were changed. I am at a loss. I can't keep trying to work this machine and get stuck at random times. I will find out if and where the trans is leaking fluid. I just cant seem to solve the stalling issue
PLEASE HELP, any suggestions??

If the transmission is losing fluid, it has to be leaking on the floor or ground - or into another compartment. If the transmission is not actually losing fluid, then it must be the sensor.

I wonder if the electronic designers realize the type of environment that tractors are subjected to?

The fluid is possible to had a void like maybe the 3 pt was up from air and then the filling of fluid afterward caused the level to be low.
The cutting out could be a coil, slow fuel flow the filter in line could even cause it. Bad fuel pump if it has one. points getting bad so it will not make connection. Bare wire to the ignition. bad switch. Dad has an H that would quit like that if you wiggled the switch it would catch and run on.

I need some more information on this tractor, they made 2 different 481s does it have a manual lift pump or a electric pump the tierII had a electric pump,if it has the electric pump take the fuel cap off and listen in the tank you should hear fuel running in from the return off the injectors,if you dont the pump is bad the pump should hum not grind, also check the fuel lines coming off the tank to the fuel pump Massey used cheep fuel hose and they would crack and suck air on the filter light check and see if the wires fell off it happens also were you running anything off the remotes? the filters that they use are high micron and I have seen them plug easy hope this helps

Run the tractor with the fuel tank cap loose. The vent may be plugged and you are pulling a vacuum on the tank. After setting the vacuum dissipates and the tractor will restart.
As for the low oil, you, or who ever changed it may have refilled it to the mark after change, but there are bound to be places that only refill when the tractor is run for a bit. You may not have any leaks.

hello - you may get more help posting this on the Massey site here (MH/MF), there are some good folks there and some former MF mechanics to assist you. Good luck

I had a similar situation once on an older Massey don't remember the model and I am not familiar with the 481 but if it has a mechanical lift pump on the side of the engine take it off and disassemble it too see if any foreign material found its way in there. I found a dead spider had gotten sucked into the pump and was blocking the flow. Now I always look into my fuel tank nozzle before filling a tractor to make sure it is clear.
