First cutting

How soon has anyone cut alfalfa? with the weather like its been here in east Nebraska the weeds or out growing the alfalfa looks really bad !

I have same problem, in east central Iowa, going to plan on May 15.

I think doing earlier than that will risk cutting with frost possible, and not enough sun to dry it.

As soon as the corn is in the ground we are going to cut. The first will all be chopped this year as the cold weather has allowed the weeds to out grow the alfalfa.

Chop for silage?

It is way too wet and cold here to dry for hay.

YEs we will put it in silage bags as it will be too wet for the up right silos. The first crop is not going to be very good with the weeds in it anyway so we will get it out of the way. Then the second crop should be much better.

Here in Central NY it'll be a couple weeks yet for haylage - some of the better alfalfa fields in the area are looking pretty good. Usually it's mid June before you can put up dry hay though.
