Just cant catch a brake.

Perhaps the crankcase ain't venting properly?...That or bail-twine wrapped up on shaft....nuthin' a little 'Lucas oil treatment' won't fix!

Common issue with the modern Kohler motors. I usually get several each year that have relatively low hours but are leaking oil. Be glad it is just seal. I have two different JD Zero turn mowers with Kohler motors that broke piston rings with under 500 hours on them. Both scored the cylinder wall to where they need bored over sized.

There are two common Kohler engines. Command engines which are great and Courage engines which are crap.

David,
My 2004, 20 hp kohler command, horizontal shaft, has 1800 hours on it. Doesn't use oil. Had to lap valves on one head. I run mine 2600 rpms. Good engine, so far. It has hydraulic lifters and roller main bearings.I change oil and filter as soon as oil turns dark, between 60-75 hours.

Boys at the mower repair shop say they have seen those with 4-5000 hours. But like everything, parts do break.

Boy had a briggs on a John Deere push mower, the bolt on crankshaft came lose and rod went out the side of motor. Very low hours on it.

I am headed to PHX for work Monday, going to sharpen the blades and put deck back on old JD LX so lawn can get mowed.

I will fix Scag when I get back.

The Command series is the ones I have had issues with. These have been on better mowers not the box store stuff. Kohler just does not have the quality of Kawasaki or Honda.

Courage singles are known to have problems, the 2 cylinder not so much. I have one with 600 hrs and going strong.
