I have used Craigs List many times and have received a scam reply numerous times. My recent reply is similiar to the scam wording, however no mention of 'extra' money sent that needs to be returned via Western Union, etc. Listing states, 'cash on pick up'.
What do you think of this reply: ??

"Glad you still have it,But i can't come look at it and pay cash as I just moved.I can pay the asking price plus shipping fee with a certified personal or cashier's check and the movers will come for pick up after check clears. Kindly get back to me with your full name, and phone number address for the mailing of the check if that is okay by you".

If he can't pay cash then how would he be able to pay you with a check? It will come straight out of his account either way. Also he says he will pay the shipping fee, but also says the movers will come pick it up after the check clears. Sounds kind of contradictory if you ask me, since its one or the other as far as shipping or picking it up, not both.

Personally I like to meet the buyer in person and always take cash only. At the very least get him on the phone, since it is often fairly easy to pick out those who have no idea what they are talking about, especially with tractors. I'm not sure what you're trying to sell or how far away he is, but depending on what it is/how much it is, would help with better identifying if it is likely to be a scam or someone actually serious about it.

We sold my brother's truck, sitting in our driveway, for cash, and many of the hundred-dollar bills were actually good.

Some of these guys are out of foreign countries and there English is not quite on the same level as yours. (most good item advat sir)!!! The scam will come out either try to get your bank account or a send money back at some point.

Yep! I believe he would mention what he is wanting to buy. Does he not realize you might have many items for sale?

Scam.

One thing that is a sure red flag, referring to "the item" or "it", says this is a form letter that has been mass mailed to as many posters as possible in hopes of getting a hit.

Think about it, every time I have responded to an ad, I assume the person may have several items listed. I always name the "item" specifically so there will be no confusion as to what I am asking about.

And offering to pay for something sight unseen? And pay additional shipping fee? Sending movers?

Nope, not falling for it!

I got about the same exact text on a car I was selling. They wanted my name and address so they could send me a cashiers check. After the check cleared, they would have their shipper pick it up. I asked them for a name and address three times before they sent one. The address was in Ca. I live in Wi and it was a $1000.00 car. I finally said cash only and delivered in person. Never heard from them again. Had another one where I was selling a three point top link. Exact same thing happened except I put the address into the computer and it showed up as being in the middle of Los Angeles. I asked what they needed a top link for living in the middle of that city. Funny thing, never heard from them again.

It's a scam.

Sure they don't MENTION any "extra money" now, but when the check arrives, it will be written for several thousand dollars more than the asking price of the item. "OOPS!" they will say, "Would you please kindly as to cash the check and forward the excess on to so-and-so, and keep $X for your trouble?"

Deal locally in cash. Ignore these scam emails. Don't even be tempted by them.

In these situations, I never do business with a stranger. No need to, take the time to know or become friends before you you talk "deal". Life is usually better that way.

Yes, the gal who called 4 times and left messages about our trouble with IRS fraud yesterday had some problems with English as well. Seems like a waste of a good scammer's time to call the same number 4 times in one day.

THANK YOU for the reply(s). Yep, Big clue is they never ask condition of item or refer to what it is...
I has a horse for sale once and the reply said, Ok I will buy your 'item', with big check, blah, blah. Who
would seriously buy a horse and not ask one question. I either do not answer or reiterate, 'cash on pick up'.

When you cash a cashier's check, you - not the check writer - are responsible for it clearing. So when - not if - it bounces, the bank will come after you. But by then you are out the refund you will be asked to pay because the movers never showed up.

Buyer beware !

I always put[b:88af971dc1] cash only[/b:88af971dc1] in my Craig's list ads

Never had a problem but will accept a bank check on larger sales
