Farmall M (Char- Lynn power steering)

We had order the kit from Steiner to put the Char- Lynn power steering on this try front end Farmall M. The reason was simple because it was had to turn the front wheel ounce out in the flied working it. This was about three years ago. We have brought it in to a shop had them look at it because it steers just as hard as if it was not there. They say it is all there and is working but we do not see any different in steering. These past years I have been trying to figure this out on this system. There is a filter on this which has a block on it which looks like it belongs to my 1964 430 ck power steering system. Is that the right filter to be using for the Char- Lynn system may I ask. Does char- Lynn power system have a filter that runs between the pump and the unit for the power steering fluid. Next question is do they make that unit and why did not tell us we had to get it. Thanks for any help.

Here is a picture of what we got. Maybe this will help out.

What you are calling a "filter" appears to be a remote oil reservoir for the pump.

There wouldn't be room for the reservist in it's original location attached to the top of the pump so an adapter has been fabricated to attach a hose where the reservoir originally was, then another block was fabbed to attach the hose to the relocated reservoir. That being said, there MAY be a filter inside that reservoir, but the primary purpose of it is oil storage.

Troubleshooting would consist of connecting a flowrater between the pump and torque generator and checking for free flow while NOT steering, and then for pressure while attempting to steer and loading the system.

I would GUESS oil flow while not steering should be 4-7 gallons per minute and pressure should build to between probably 750 and 100 PSI while attempting to steer.

Have you checked the stock gear box to see if it has lube in it? How about the bottom bearing on the bolster above the ft wheels? Does the zerk on the front below the grill take grease? Jack the front up by the frame and give it 15 -20 pumps with your gun see if that helps. No filter but I think it might have screen in the reservoir.

A char lynn will make a JD A or G steer with one finger. I think you need to pressure test the pump, and make sure the hoses are installed correctly.

I would have to go look at the one I have, but is it possible that you have the motor in the steering shaft backwards. I thought that the other end went towards the steering wheel. Been wrong before!

I had looked at this unit the high Pressure is on the right side and the low is on the left side. When looking from the front of the tractor. When on the seat it looking at it then it would be Left to right.

yes it has lube in it and the bottom is well lube. some body told me to use transmission fluid in it. is that correct? Or shall I try a different type in the system.
