Buying and selling, Grrrrr

Used to be when you were selling an item and a buyer would ask "will you take X for it?" and IF you said yes that meant it was sold. But no longer, tire kickers now might say OK I will think about it, or OK thanks, or I just wondered how little you would take, etc etc, Grrrrr. SO, now when somebody asks me if I will take "X" I say are you buying or shopping?

Ya, I am an old grouch today.

That's for sure. The craigslist callers don't even look at it and start jewing you down on the phone. Most stuff I sell is not really popular and I just want rid of it. I have no idea of worth so I make up a price and advertise it. If the phone doesn't ring I will then start lowering the price until I get calls.

Had a motorcycle for sale years ago. Some young twerp showed up with his girl friend, then wheelied up and down my driveway a few times while she sat in the car -- then left. Had no intention of buying it.

I replaced the front seat on my Chevy with a nice used one recently. Decided this morning that the old one had to go. Put it on CL and a guy called to get the address and said he'd be right over.
Got here and loaded it up.
He didnt quibble on the price.
Free.

I was just thinking (after seeing a motorcycle with a sign on it) FOR SALE BY OWNER. Why not For Sale by neighbor, or for sale by distant relatives, why is it always For Sale by Owner?

Once I was selling a Farmall H for $1100, and a fellow bargained me down to $900. I said okay, after thinking it over. He decided he still wasn't happy with the deal and left. A few days later he came by again and said he had changed his mind and wanted to buy it. I told him $950 was the lowest I would go. He said I had told him he could have it for $900 and I said yes, but then you walked away. He ended up buying it for $950. People are strange (not me but the other ones).

Many years ago I had a good running dirt bike my son outgrew so I set it in the drive with $50 on it. A man test drove it and offered $40. No thanks. Next day I took the seat by a buddy's shop to have it covered. I installed the seat and rolled it out when I got home. Brother stopped to have a brew and visit. Same guy showed up with $50 in hand. Nope,it's $60 now that I covered the seat. He stomped, cursed and went to his truck and left. 5 minutes later he was back complaing about me raiseing the price. I told him it had gone up another $15 in the short time he was gone. Without another word he pulled out $75 and ask if I would help load it. I've about give up on CraigsList. I can't figure how people have time to do all the squirrely stuff they do. Phone ring's constantly with people saying they are on the way and never see them.

I won't respond to an add for OBO. If I want to go to an auction, I'll go to an auction. Put a price on it,I will ask you if you are firm on it. If yes and I think it is fair, I'll hand you money. If you indicate you are negotiable, I'll throw you an offer, you accept, I give you money.

Why does it need to be difficult? It's nothing more than a transaction.

Butch put a fair price on the item then tell them you are selling it for a family member who moved to New Mexico. You cannot immediately contact him and its his price. Saw this done and it stops dickering. Kind of like the owner is not here (he is only one that can dicker).

Had 2 14.9x38 nearly bald tractor tires. Took to swap meet sat thinking someone with tractor just to have it not to use in field might want them. About 10 min after I parked trailer fellow looked them over. How much , I'm thinking well is 30.00 too much. They are just black and round. He said no too cheap here is two twentys. First time ever for me.

A guy said he would pay me to fix the brakes and then he would buy my car. He never came back. I think a statement about the down payment might answer the question of buyer or tire kicker

Yup, I had a guy that kept calling me on a skidsteer I had. I gave him my best price..Ok, I will call you back about coming to look at it. Next week he would call and ask about my price and coming to look at it. The third time he called I told him the price was $200 higher because I had to pay for more advertising. He got ------ and I never heard from him again...

It's crazy how CL trolls don't even read the ad. They call and want to know what's least ill take. About half don't care they want it and don't quibble. Yesterday guy drove 3 hours handed me the money and was tickled to get the item.

I think the OBO (or best offer) always follows and asking price does it not? For example, $3000 obo means an asking price of $3000 or open to an offer (which may or may not be accepted). Just a statement saying "obo" as a price doesn't even make sense. Is that what you are saying on your post? If it is, I've never seen that.

Sacrebleu!
I am of French heritage.
You don't know how many times in my life I've heard someone let out a cuss word then think better of it and say; "Oops! Pardon my French."
I suppose I could be overly sensitive about it, remind them that vulgarity is not exclusive to the French and their language and make a general fuss. But i dont let it bother me as I know it's just an old phrase that people use. You might consider trying that yourself. It's easier to go through life when youre not getting upset at every tiny insult.

There is a big difference. Pardon my French is saying something about a language, not a race. I just pointed out an anti semetic statement, to me it says more about the person saying it , then it does about my race. You even pointed out yourself it was an insult.

The best ones are the ones that make you offers before even looking at what your selling. I sold my old beat up Buick a few years back. Had it advertised for $1500. I had that thing sold half a dozen times on the phone, but not one showed to even look at it. First guy that came and looked at it bought it, never offered me anything until after checking it out. Amazing

[b:068bfd400c]Unbelievable but true---[/b:068bfd400c]I sell a lot of chainsaws on CL.
Had a guy call me and drove 640 miles, one way, to look at a couple I had for sale.
Strange that he refused to buy both and have me ship the saws to him?
He made an offer for both but was $100 short. He asked if he could pay what he had and take one with him, send me the $100 when he got home and me ship the other saw to him?
I refused the offer and he bought one and started to leave.
I reconsidered his offer and told him to take both saws and send me the $100.
He was surprised and happy.
Few days later I received Postal money order in mail.
That is just another reason I never buy or sell on the phone and I will only hold and item for a length of time after a buyer says he is on his way.

You gotta keep in mind that there are all types out there. It's no different than it ever was. You just weren't exposed to it.

If you can't handle haggling and strange people, the solution is simple: Don't sell anything, ever.

I was selling a Ford tractor for $1200. Got a ton of emails and low ball offers. A guy comes to look at it for what seems like 20 minutes, points out every little thing that's wrong and asked what's the best I can do on it? I tell him $1000 and won't go lower. He then tell me he would have to drive it home. So I ask how far he is. It's about four miles from me so I tell him I'll deliver it for free. After all this the guy sez I'll have to think about it. Now here's where it get interesting the guy sez if you get any other offers on it call me and let me know in case I what it. I sold it two days later for full price. I deleted the ad. Next day the guy calls me and wants to buy the tractor. I tell him it been sold. He sez I thought you were going to call if you got an offer. I told him I got full price for it and you had to think about it $200 less and free delivery

Yah, those are the guys that have the most valuable items on the planet for sale .... ha! The other one that gets me is "serious buyers only" or something like "no tire kickers" ..... a good way to keep potential buyers away I'd say.

Knock it off. He's right, you are wrong. Neither you nor anyone else on here should not use a derogatory term to refer to an entire race of people, ESPECIALLY when someone says they are offended by it! They are not crybabies. Grow up yourself, calling people names because they say they are offended by the slight. Read the reminder at the top of the "post a reply page".

What business is this of yours?
And who are you to tell others here to "knock it off"?
To begin with.Jews are not a race. Secondly, I'm sick of all the hypersensitive people who need to curtail other's speech because they are easily " triggered".
I don't care if you go through life whining about silly crap.
But if you do it here I'm gonna scoff at you for it.

...A perfectly good thread shot to hell. *sigh*

Concerning the "Pardon my French" saying, it seems as though nobody out there knows how this saying came to be. Back in the 50's(?)-60's, when adults would say a swear word around a young person (or sometimes a very elderly one), the offending person would say "Pardon my French", as French was very popular back then, though not so many people spoke it. So in order for kids to not know the adult was swearing, the adult would call it "French". It wasn't meant to be offensive to France or the French people - it just sorta happened.

...At least that's how I learned it to be.

I felt compelled to respond since one person objected to the term's use, and then was called a crybaby because of it. I thought "WE" here at YT should be above that. IF you are "thicker-skinned" than I am or another person is, great for you. OR, if a group you associate with being derided does not bother you, again, great for you.

All things are not the same to everyone, part of the good of this place. Scoff away.

"I felt compelled..."
"I thought..."
"We at yt should..."

Your compulsions, your thinking and what you
feel is appropriate behavior here are yours.
They may not be mine.
If you want to be the most sensitive, most
inoffensive person here then be so.
But don't lecture me on My behavior.
I don't care how much moral authority you
Think you have.
I will not be instructed by someone so
easily triggered by what I believe are
trivial matters.

Yes, is saddening when these types of threads show up. On a good note though, I've been an active member on three different forums, but now come ONLY here as this is the kind of stuff I'm tired of seeing on the other forums. I know it's not possible to keep this stuff out 100% of the time, but I have been THRILLED with how little there is going on here at YT.

I am just about ready to block all the Facebook buy/sell pages. I think the people who buy and sell on Facebook make the Craigslist guys seem like geniuses.
