Utility Tractor Collection

I am interested in collecting the most popular utility tractor of each brand. Right now I have a ford 4000 (four cyl), John Deere 2010, Allis Chalmers WD. I am looking for a MF 135 because my uncle used to have one and I put in a lot of time on that thing. Then I really like the look of the Oliver 550, especially the square grill ones, but I do not know much about them.

My question is, do any of you guys have a utility tractor collection, and what models would you like to include if you did. I plan on using these to raise produce. (I don't like taking time to unhook and hook up different equipment all the time!)

i have an international 240u, handy lil dude. i use it on the bush hog, finish mower, landscape soil finisher, back blade, and a lil genius 2 btm plow. with the fast hitch and a 3pt conversion it gets a lot of use.

The 550 was probably one of the better utility tractors, at least early on. Small size (similar to the N Fords), but 38 HP, diesel power, power steering and remote hydraulic available, true 3 point hitch, and best of all, independent PTO (not a 2 stage clutch like most others).

I'll second the knock on the 2010- from that era, the 2020 would be a much better choice.

A late model case 530 diesel case-o-matic would be an awesome utilty tractor. Over 40 hp, live pto and hydraulics, 3pt, and the case-o-matic is the perfect tilling and loader transmission type. The earlier with the eagle hitch are good too, with the eagle hitch having both better and worse qualities than the 3pt depending on the job. One of them is on my list for "some day".

I guess I glossed over the part of your post about growing produce. While it would be interesting to have a collection of all different tractors, a more practical approach was that of the Japanese and Filipino produce growers around Tacoma and Puyallup, Washington (pretty much a thing of the past- no matter how much they liked farming their 20 or 30 acres, they all eventually succumbed to offers of millions of $$ for development). They had collections of 6 or 7 of the same tractor- usually Farmall Super A's, but some with Allis Chalmers G's. Each would have its own mounted implement, but had the added flexibility of changing it over to another if a tractor broke down. Each usually had one bigger tractor, for primary tillage.

One I talked to said "We all used to laugh at the G's, they were funny looking- but those guys had the last laugh when we eventually sold out. They were getting $3,000 for the G's, I had to struggle to get a thousand apiece for my Super A's".

I cannot call the WD being a utility tractor, Now the D series , D10, D12, D14, D15, D17 I could as some of them were only wide front end and rest avaible. The Most popular utility tractor would have been the 9N-2N Ford with the 8N, NAA, Ferguson 20,30 & 35 and MF 135 at top of list. None of the otheres had the sales numbers of these altho about all companys had a good utility with the newer tractors now called utility I cannot class then as utilities. A utiliy is a lower built with wide front end.

Most tractors in that age and size range are pretty good work horses because the manufacturers built a LOT of them and had time and resources to get it right. The specialty mounted implements are getting harder to find is the only minus and if you work them a lot it doesn't take long for a diesel to pay its own way in fuel savings. I like every model you listed well enough to own one if I had need. The A-C WD has a minus due to the odd ball hitch (and I am an A-C guy) The MF 135 and Deere would be easiest to find parts for at the dealer but used and aftermarket will keep the others going too.

I wouldn't call it a "collection" of them,but I've got an Oliver Super 55,500 (British) and a 1365.

Yes, built lower as you say ..... and also, the operator straddles the tranny in most cases (instead of perching himself up on top of it).

Also look at Case 300, IH 300, MM335 and Oliver 55. We bought a MM335; it was a good tractor.

I would look for a 1020 JD or a 1630 JD. They have the best power steering and hydraulics. A newer CASE 430 or 530 with power steering are also great tractors

Be hard to have a utility tractor collection without having a N series Ford ! Most popular tractor ever.

I would put the 3 cylinder Ford 4000 above the 4 cylinder model - in sales, reliability, functionality and probably a few other criteria as well.

I had 2 of the 4000 3 cylinder models, never had a 4 cylinder but there were quite a few things about them I liked better that the ones I had. Oh the 38" rear wheels were nice and the extra 4 HP. but govener was way worse and this also from Ford tractor dealer. And I DID NOT LIKE THE INDEPENDANT PTO, the 2 stage clutch would have been a lot better for me, The 3 cylinder had a cat 2 hitch that I did not need but the extendable lift arms were nice.

I know but its the first one I acquired and it got me started. Now it mostly stays hooked to the sweet corn sprayer, since it is a row crop utility and sits a little higher its a good sprayer tractor.
