Neighboring farmer to the South brought up his tile plow yesterday. When we go back to Alfalfa again it should do a little better.

Usually installed about 3 feet or deeper here, depending on lay of the land. Sometimes need to go 5-7 feet to maintain grade. Below that, dozer work first to make a cut so the plow can install at proper depth. This photo shows out tiler on a foggy day a few years ago. He built his own plow, and depth/grade is controlled by an Intellislope GPS unit- drive over the path, set the desired grade, and Intellislope controls the hyd to maintain grade. No laser involved anymore. For hard pulls, he adds another Challenger in front.

I've watched lots of tiling in this area over the last few years and have wondered what are the overall benefits and how long does it take to get your investment dollars back?

My previous understanding was that tiling was only used to drain low spots, but now it is placed across entire fields in parallel lines. That seems such an "overkill". I still haven't figured out the "benefit" to that. But then I'm not a farmer or soil engineer or tech.
