Larry you will have to try another planter option. My neighbor puts a section of eve trough across the tops of his garden fence post. He then fill it with soil. You now have a small, long grow box safe from rabbits and such.
 
When I cultivate the first time through I use rolling shields to keep from covering the little corn or beans. The fact that you are running with no shields speaks highly of you as an operator.
