Chev 3500 master cylinder.

I have an 04 dually that just gets used on the stock trailer. It has the duramax in it and about 125k miles. I changed the oil in it about 500 miles ago and all was well. I fired it up today to move some fat steers and could hear the power steering pump whine a bit. It was just barely on the dipstick.

I got to looking and the brake master cylinder is wet with drips coming off the firewall end of it. I assume it is like my 2500 and uses power steering to boost brakes? Can that master cylinder be split and only replace the pump portion and not the brake half? It is full of brake fluid and hasn't ever leaked and or given any brake trouble. Knowing the price of brake master cylinders on these newer vehicles I thought I would cross my fingers and ask.

Just another reason to hate this pickup. If 3500's weren't so expensive she would be gone.

The hydra-boost part and the master cylinder are two different pieces. You do not even have to loosen the brake lines. Just move it a little to get the hydra-boost section out. Usually take the brake pedal linkage and mounting bolts out from the inside. Not too bad of a job.

That will be up to the rebuilder that supplies the booster unit. You may be able to buy it without the master cylinder, just have to do some research. I would start with online sources, like Rock Auto.

But something you may want to try is some Lucas power steering seal conditioner. Put it in the steering pump only, not in the master cylinder!

I've used it with good success. Had a 01 Silverado with 250,000 miles, leaking rack and pinion, it completely stopped the leak. Used it in the Ferguson TO35 power steering, it stopped the upper seal leak which I believe is original from 1960!

I changed the booster out on my 2500 hundred last year it was only around 100 with turning in the old one

I WOULD NOT use the Locus sealer in the power steering system. That stuff just swells the rubber components. This can damage the steering gear and other things. Just fix it correctly. Replace the booster unit. Remanufactured Delco is only $95 exchange on Rock Auto.
