Farmall H 12 volt Probloms

I recently converted my 1952 farmall H to 12 volt. Everything is right on it. it used to start first crank with 6 volt. now it won't start vary well. It will crank and crank but wont start. sometimes it will but most times it won't start. it's a barrel coil tractor. do I need to replace that? I have a resister in the line. if you pop start it, it starts right away. I cleaned everything up. any help would be great.

Try by passing the ballast resister and if it starts easy then good chance you have a ballast resister that has to high of a ohm value so you need one with less resistance

If you want to trouble shoot it rather than throwing parts at it you need an analog voltmeter. Connect it to the resistor side of the coil and check the voltage while cranking. If it reads much less than 6 volts while cranking go to ignition switch side of resistor and read again. If it drops much below 12 volts keep working back toward battery till you find where you are loosing the higher voltage.

Did you change the polarity from positive ground to negative ground when you made the switch? Sounds like a problem a guy was telling me about several years ago with a Ferguson 30. He said they were hauling hay one afternoon,it wouldn't start, they went to town and got a new battery and it would never start again unless they towed it,then it popped right off almost instantly. He said they had put the battery in with negative ground instead of positive.
