Need more power?

Everyone likes to get a bit more power out of their tractor. Here is a couple of units to repower yours. 2700 hp V 16 Detroit used in 300 ton rock trucks in the copper mine south of Tuscon.R 4360 28 cylinder gas engine used in the B 36 and other aircraft. Around 3000 hp depending on model. The diesel is rated at 40 gph, the gas probably 3 times that. Better own oil stocks. Ben

used to be a trucker who drove for werner had a v16 him and his father put in a freightliner classic. You knew when he was passing you lol

Versions of the R4360 28 cylinder radial engine were turbo compounded, i.e., after the exhaust gasses exited the turbochargers, there was still enough heat energy left to drive a second stage turbocharger geared directly to the engine output shaft, adding another 250 HP.

Fascinating engines.

The B36 at the Air Force Museum in Dayton Ohio is a thing to behold. Six turnin' and four burnin'.

That R4360 is probably the most complicated engine ever made by man nor beast ! Amazing they could keep those suckers running - it is a radial with about a gillion moving parts and at least 5000 spark plugs ! Saw/ heard one run on a stand many moons ago - AWESOME ! ;^)

NOPE, RELATIVELY SIMPLE...TRY GOOD OLD BRITS, BRISTOL CENTAURUS OR NAPIER SABRE...SEE COMMENTS NEXT POST...BE BLESSED, GRATEFUL, PREPARED, NIK USED @ B-50, MARTIN MAULER SINGLE, C-124...

Love those 4360's. Turbines make more power, are cheaper to operate...I get that. But when you stand on the flight line with four of those corncobs running, well, that's what real power is just supposed to sound like. Ok, so I'm stuck in another era, I don't think any apology is needed.

Agreed, Batel.

I've been to the Dayton air show several times.

The 1995 show commemorated the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII. At one time they had, IIRC, 50 WWII vintage aircraft in the air at the same time. I was able to get near to the aircraft as they were warming up before takeoff. Standing within 20' or so of an idling P51 or F4U, listening to the engine is mesmerizing.

Some models of the 4360 were rated to 4000+ HP.As kid I can remember B 36's flying over at high altitude.A low pitched hum rather then the chop of other recip. aircraft.

I believe that all radial engines have an odd number of cylinders (if they were a four-stroke engine). Apparently there are even-numbers of cylinders on some radial engines but they're not that common. All of this from something I heard years ago and then verified with some Googling. I suspect you were referring to four 7-cylinder radials in your post, just guessing on that.

The 4360 did consume or leak a lot of oil.In the C124 cargo compt.there were large tanks holding extra oil. They were manifolded to the engines so that if one got low a crew member could pump oil out to the engine that needed it.

Last row of cylinders tended to run hot. Had to be selective with the throttle and mixture to reduce the number of cracked cylinders .
