Barn cleaner chain measurements

Anybody know what a new Badger barn cleaner chain measures from the front edge of one paddle to the next? I know they're worn out at 19" and change. The chain in the barn is at 20" and barely hanging on.

Looking at a used chain that the guy says is 16"-and-something, but I'm not sure he's measuring it right.

This always confuses me also. In the first picture
the length of just the flight, not including the chain
link it is welded to, little more than 16" . In the
second picture the width of the gutter, with the flight
in it , appears to be a tad over 18". So I would
conclud that I have a 18" gutter cleaner chain. Is
your chain a hook and eye , or a pintle style? I am
still doing battle with my worn out Berg cleaner on
73 stalls. I have 32 tie stalls that I clean out with s
skid steer. The skid steer is a far better way to clean
out tie barns than a gutter cleaner , and they do not
require the same space to manover that a tractor
requires. Bruce

Hi Bruce,

What you're measuring is the width of the gutter/flight.

I'm looking for the other dimension. The distance from one flight to the next, along the chain. This is a measure of how worn the chain is.

There isn't even enough room in this barn for a skidsteer, and even if we could I don't know how you'd shovel out the gutter with a skidsteer. It would be cheaper to buy a new chain than to bust up the floor so you could clean the barn with a skidsteer.

I used a skid loader on my gutters simply dropped the corner of the bucket in and pushed out to pit.
I have seen setups where there was a paddle on the front of the bucket and pushed out but kinda tricky to keep in square. One i know of was pushing out on a wet day didn't slow down soon enough got the wrecker to fish him out of the spreader put a bumper on after that.

I have a pretty good badger chain. It
measures 16 3/4 inches between the paddles.
It has two links between each paddle.

Ok lets start over . What is going wrong with your stable cleaner ? Is it coming off
of the star gear at the top of the shoot ? Or is it coming out of the reverse turn ?
The distance from one flight to the next has more to do with how well material goes up
the shoot, then how worn the chain is . I keep three links of chain in between the
flights. If your chain is worn/stretched , and jumps off the gear at the end of the
shoot , you can solve this by putting on a over sized gear. If the chain slips out of
the reverse turn , then probably the heels are worn off the bottom of the flight .
Tell me what is going wrong. Bruce

My dad was too cheap to replace our worn out chain. He removed it and made me
clean the gutter with a shovel and a wheelbarrow. If you want your kids to stay
in the dairy business, buy a new chain if you can't fix yours. It didn't take
me very long to decide what I didn't want to do the rest of my life, shovel cow
poo.
