Diesel Scout

Quick look in the SCOUT encyclopedia just says they started in 1996 with 1602 being built and ended in 1980 with over 5000 being diesel and yes they did offer an automatic . I should know the model of the Neisian engine but can not remember it right now. Only other application was some fork lifts I am thinking. Several running engines around.

A's I remember it was a 6 cylinder the first year and more gutless than the 4 cyl. gas. The 2nd gen was a turbo charged version that defined turbo lag. You had to drive it like you stole it.

Rusty you are being nice whey you say a bit underpowered, it was a dog.. would not pull the hat off you head.

Thanks, All . Sister's 96 Grand Cherokee has nice body and bad motor. Toying with the idea of Dieselizing it, but everything I have with a trans is too big. A Deutz F5L-912 will fit but I don't have a trans for it. I never knew what the Scout had, from what you guys are saying it would be too small any way. Fritz

With all the troubles my niece had with Grand Cherokees You best scrap it !
She went to Honda CRV and was a lot better for it.

My only question is why you want to "dieselize it"? Do you want better fuel economy or you just want people to know that you are coming?
Decades ago, when the first Scouts had the diesel option, I remember an automotive magazine tested one. I remember they said it was slow, annoying and people "looked at them with fright from a block away." I actually have an '83 Chevette with a factory diesel. I know what the magazine was talking about.

Our rural mail carrier had one with the diesel and automatic. He broke several auto trans flex plates in a couple years, don't know if a misalignment problem or what ?
