My neighbor lady's sister in law was killed by a stray bullet. Last week gang members were having shoot out over some graffiti painted in the others gang's area. A stray bullet hit the lady, and killed her. The police caught the low life's. One was 16, the other around 20. Such a shame. Stan

That's sad, gang rivalry nonsense should not determine ones fate.

We have similar activity at times not far from here. A friend has lived in a nice 3 story brownstone, 2 levels are his and one floor is at street level. Built on a steep slope, not too many places a stray bullet can get to you, but when I heard a magazine emptied outside one time, I ducked into the stairwell between the upper and lower level immediately. There has been at least one or two people shot at one end or the other of the block. Seems to be sporadic and I don't recall much of this activity lately, but for awhile gangs were active with this nonsense.

Gangs should be hunted down like we did wolves 150 years ago. The trouble in today's world is the gangs are mostly minorities that have more rights than law abiding citizens. Gangs could easily be brought under control with an all out effort but it never will be all out now.

That's too bad to hear. I'd have to agree with JD. Im in the middle of reading a worldwide homicide study. So far it places the largest share of blame on drugs and gangs with other factors contributing little or none statistically.

I should have included more info. The homicide clearance rate also has a sizable effect on that rate according to this study. They basically break it down into 3 groups, crime related, interpersonal, sociopolitical. Interesting study, but not real interesting reading.

Here on Long island we have had the ms-13 gang killing multiple people in the Brentwood area---there is a major police push now to eliminate the gang

I would add that the court system acts like a revolving door and criminals know it.
Most don't get jail time or deported.

Shoot now days the court/criminal justice system does not work at all. All one has to do is have enough $$ and one can get away with most any thing. I see if happening all the time and a person can be charged with something and question just because some one make a phone all turning them in for something they did not do but yet the cops show up and hassle a person. Now days making a false police report happens all the time and those who do it get away with ti and the person who the police report is made on get harassed

We live in a nice safe suburb, but there are a lot of places in Phoenix and the west suburbs where you are wise not to walk outside after dark. There are people that will shoot anyone they see out walking the sidewalks. Some of the shooters are gang members and some are just crazy on drugs.

The problem is our judicial system. If the penalties are strict enough you could bring crime to a screeching halt immediately

Agreed, and the penalties for belonging to a violent gang and committing crime should mandatory and doubled.

I disagree, the judicial system works after the fact, it comes down to personal ethics and child raising.

Here in Sturgis last week, my daughter in law escorted a prisoner from the Meade Co. Court that was convicted of murdering his former girl friend and her current boy friend. He was sentenced to a total of 220 years in prison. He can get out on probation in 120 years though. GOOD JUDGE!

I like JD Seller's idea, but I'm afraid that ain't gonna happen.

We need to get a handle on dysfunctional families, the drug epidemic and get people to working again. "Idle hands are the devil's workshop" my grandpa used to say. When we were kids, we started working in a gas station, or sacking groceries, or pitching hay bales when we were old enough to really do it, 10-12 years old. We learned the value of work, the value of money and what it took to work for something. Nowadays there are several generations of some families who have never held a job. There are millions of people out of the workforce and something like 40 million people on public assistance of some kind, sometimes for generations. I have a Jimmy Dean album with a song called "Philosophizin'" on it. "People don't need to work because it pays so well." It was recorded in 1963!

You can stop most all of the gangs by legalizing and controlling drugs, leaving the users with safer sources, us with safer neighborhoods, hoods with no prospect of profits. Taxation on the drugs must pay for the inforcement of that system. But this overly simple way, has no chance with the hard-heated, my way or the highway thinking at the top, purposely preached at the top to give a few "leaders" a job. Leo, who uses only aspirin!

Sorry. Legalizing drugs won't stop violence or bad players. People who act as drug dealers do will not straighten up and fly
right simply because their venture is now regulated by the government. The mentality that causes one to ship drugs in cadavers,
kill workers to avoid payment, pollute and destroy environments to grow or process products won't change because the market
shifts. These are ignorant, low life individuals who will simply do something else bad or continue to do as they have always
done.

I live in CA where marijuana has been legalized. The idiots that grew, processed, and sold this stuff continue to do so. The
legal grows are targets for bad players. The legitimate operations employ labor equally as bad as the illegitimate operations.
There are places in Sonoma and Napa Counties that think they can develop a tourism business where patrons come and sample the
wares as they do wine. Now we can have stoned and drunken tourists traveling the roads.

THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM IS NOW MORE THE UNJUSTICE SYSTEM THEN IT IS A JUSTICE SYSTEM.

Now days many people who have not committed a crime in any way end up behind bars because they can not afford a lawyer. Plus many judges and cops are on the take so if one has $$ they can and do get aways with pretty much anything

In my town we have an average of about one killing a week, but it doesn't seem to stem from drug dealing or turf wars. In most cases it's just that some individual gets "dissed" and goes after the other guy with a gun. They kill each other for the most trivial of reasons. For instance, recently a dude was going into the convenience store and had just lit a cigarette. He knew he wasn't supposed to take it inside, so he laid it on something outside the door. Another dude came along and finished the cigarette. That was apparently a capital offense because when the first dude came out and figured out what happened, he capped the second dude. This sort of stupidity is routinely normal here.

(quoted from post at 12:43:00 03/19/17) JD is right and shoot to kill. If the price was high enough it would also deter them like death for possession.

Also bring back the chain gang. Make it down right miserable to be in prison....now it is a vacation for most of these guys. Take them down to the border and give them a shovel, a tent, green eggs and spam...we have a wall to build!

I have always thought the government should buy a huge boat and load up as many of these s%$t bags as it will fit. Then tow it to the middle of the Atlantic and blow a hole in the bottom!!! Do this once every 5-10 years. Tax money well spent!!!

Travis I had a similar idea I was telling the guys at work the other day. You load a ship up with all the scumbags on the deck and go about 10 miles off shore and the ship is designed to do a complete 360 degree roll over. Return to shore and repeat the process as much as needed.

I said the same thing about some around me. Told my uncle that we needed to throw them in the river with some weights tied to them, but my uncle said that would pollute the river and would ruin his fishing!

I know they say that smoking is hazardous to your health, but this is definitely going overboard!

Eldon, we couldn't allow the treatment of
our nonproductive citizens like that!
Wouldn't be politically correct!
