I have a 1989 JD850. The engine runs great, but once I start working it the radiator over-flows into the reservoir and it fills up until it spews antifreeze all over. I have changed hoses and changed the thermostat, as it was bad. Cleaned the screens on the radiator too. I figured it fixed the problem. But I still get the same result.

Anyone else have this problem? If so, give me some ideas.

Thanks, Terry

If you are lucky it could be the head gasket. It might be a cracked head or block. You'll get better results from the JD board.
The little Yanmar engines are pretty durable but not unbreakable.

If it ever got hot on you, my money's on a cracked head. One of my compact Kubotas (B7100) was over heated and cracked the head. It was not getting water in the oil. To check the head gasket, you have to pull the head. So, while it is off, have it magna-fluxed. I ended up replacing my head ($600) but later had a friend tell me he had one repaired for $300 from a place he found on the internet.

Start with the easy stuff first. Have the radiator checked for blockage first. Those little Yanmars are great engines, but the cooling systems are marginally sized and won't work properly with restricted coolant flow.

A quick check, before the overflow starts, how hot is the engine?

If the engine gets hot, above safe operating temp before the overflow starts, and the air coming through the radiator is cold, there is a lack of circulation. Could be clogged radiator core, bad (even though new)thermostat, loose water pump belt.

If it pressurizes shortly after starting, before the engine is above safe operating temp. chances are the head gasket is leaking or the head is cracked. There is a test kit to check for combustion gasses in the coolant.
Combustion gas test kit.

I did replace the radiator cap too as I was thinking maybe someone just put a cap on it and the pressure was not righ. Thanks for the information

I have the exact same year and tractor. Been bullet proof for all these years...only replaced one fuse and a battery. I suspect you have either a head gasket problem, cracked block or a clogged radiator. Before I pulled the head I would remove the water pump and check out the impellor to be sure it isn't corroded or slipping on the shaft.
