It is quite possible the push rod tubes are rusted thru, had it happen on a 49 jd B that had sat a long tme years ago. On the late ones you pressed out the old ones & pressed in new ones.

What model of John Deere do you have? How long is 'awhile'? Is the water clear? How much water? If it sits for several months and you are in an area where condensation happens at certain times of the year it could be just condensation. Over a few months you could get a tablespoon of clear water from condensation. If you have antifreeze in the radiator and the water in the crankcase is green then it is indeed leaking from the cooling system into the crankcase. If you do have water leaking in from the cooling system it's best to take the head off and have it checked out at a machine shop THAT KNOWS OLD DEERES. Coolant most likely would be leaking through a cracked push rod tube. It could be a warped or cracked head too but the push rod tubes are the most likely culprit to let coolant into the crankcase.

As the others have said, possibly the pushrod tubes. Remove the valve cover, with the front of the tractor lower than the rear, see if water drips from the tubes the pushrods go through. New pushrod tubes can be bought from www. HANDJMachining.com
