J. D. 4440 Quad Transmission Hard to Shift

Potential purchase for an as-is J. D. 4440 with transmission issues. Owner says that the low and reverse gears are difficult to access and problem is getting worse. Dealer says repair is in the top shaft region and could cost upwards of CA $12,000 to fix.
Anyone out there had the same problem with this series and what was your repair experience? Thanks in advance for your reply.
 
Assuming the diagnosis is correct I would (and have) done that job for considerably less.
What do the cab mounts look like?
 
It is my brother-in-law's tractor and this potential deal came up in casual conversation. With these stupid blizzards passing through I haven't got across the river to give the tractor a good 'once-over'. Is there something I should look for in regards to the cab mounts?
I assume that the dealer wants to steer him towards a new tractor sale and either no trade or so little for the 4440 trade that they can make a few bucks. Human nature.

I think from what other stuff I read on here before if the cab mounts go bad the cab shifts and lets the shifter linkage bind up. But if they keep grinding them into gear or if they keep popping out of gear it can then further tear up things inside.
Try posting at the JD forum. timS and others, spend more of his free time there but is usually pretty busy. He works full time on these tractors fixing this type of stuff. He has posted his direct email before not too long ago you can search his posts.

Clutch drag can cause that problem and if it goes on for too long it will ruin the Synchronizer, and of course reverse has no synchronizer in that model,, and yes most dealers instruct the shop foremen to give high estimates on older repair jobs to steer the owners into the sales office..I do a top shaft repair on a cab tractor for about $1800 labor,and about that much in parts with a new trans pump.
