Question for RRLund and other White guys

My "new" White 2-105 is at the trucker's yard. It's not plugged in and it was -5 F last night, up to 22 at 11 am. I tried to start it but it was not turning anywhere near fast enough. How warm will it need to be so I can start it without ether, or what temp will it start with a shot of ether?
Next question, how does the double fuel tanks work? The tank up on top of the hood is marked "not vented" and doesn't want to open easily. The one on the right hand side down by the step is vented and opened easily so I put 10 gallons of fuel in it to get it home. I also think my fuel gage is shot. Thanks , Harv.

Maybe what you need to do is put a set of jumper cables on it if it's not cranking at a good speed. At 22degrees, it should start if it's cranking over at a decent speed and everything else is in good condition. On your fuel tanks, I you have a non vented cap on the top tank, as the fuel is used from that tank, it will draw the fuel from the lower tank into the top tank. Do not switch caps from one tank to the other. If you put the vented cap on the top tank, the bottom tank will not be useable because fuel won't get drawn into the top tank. Fuel from the bottom tank has to go through the top tank to get used.

If it was -5* overnight then chances are even at noon the following day with a temp of 22* the bulk of the metal in the tractor is still probably zero degrees. Shes going to be a hard starter. Some jumper cables to get it turning over faster and a shot of ether should get it going.

Those Perkins engines don't seem to all be the same. The original in my 1850 started hard when it was cold. I put one out of a White 8700 combine in it and it starts in great shape down to 20F with just the manifold heater. My 2-105 is somewhere in between. It has the thermostart manifold heater that ignites fuel in the manifold instead of having a 12 volt electric heating coil in the manifold. I started it this morning at about 28F using the thermostart and it fired right up,but much colder than that,it's best to plug in the block heater. I don't know why that thermostart doesn't work as well as the one on my 1365. I've started that one down as cold as -18F using the thermostart only.

There should be a black rubber button next to the key in yours. That's the manifold heater. I don't know if yours would have the electric coil or the thermostart without seeing it. Try holding that button down for 45-50 seconds and then try to start it. Don't use starting fluid after you hold that button down!

As far as the fuel tank, fill the top one. Mine doesn't have the lower tank. My 2-135 does, but it doesn't have a cap on the bottom tank, only on the top and it runs down to the lower through a good sized hose. Your non vented cap goes up on top on the main tank, and the vented cap goes on the auxiliary tank according to the manual. Vacuum from the engine draws fuel from the lower tank to the upper.

Do you mean that the title of his post was not politically correct? I do not know what the demographic mix is on this site but I try not to offend anyone and I am sure that all other posters are careful about that to. I am certain that no discrimination was meant by Old Harv. It just came out wrong.

It took me a while to figure out what you meant! I guess I should say guys with experience with White tractors!

My youngest son and the guys at the hardware store were conspiring to have a decal made to put on the back window of mine saying White Power. lol

Usually the references is to the Reds or Greenies guys, Oranges and Whities rarely mentioned by traditional teasers, little Grey Ns have plenty of support, they need them if they want to play in corn fields knee high. RN

Everything has to be PC anymore ! I just spotted it first off because the guys at work are always teasing about things like this.

I "HOPE" the new guy can "CHANGE" some of this silliness.

Oh boy ,reading the green highlighted areas below when posting I also hope this doesn't get kicked off now.

Sharp! A dealer had one with 1500 hours and they were asking $7500. $6800 with that few hours might be a heck of a bargain.

Our local co-op sold white outdoor power equipment and sign said white power equipment! The white tiller dad had also had that on the sticker.

rrlund and kenl's answer to the fuel tanks contradict each other, had a 1978 2-105 back in 1978 and I cant be for certain who's correct but I think kenl is correct, vented cap on bottom tank. if I remember correctly the fuel line that connected the two tanks was routed from the bottom tank to the very top of the top tank, wouldn't make much sense for the top tank to drain into the bottom tank when the sending gauge is in the top tank. but I may be wrong also, buy a owners manual.

not every diesel of the same make is going to start the same in cold weather, condition of the engine is going to be the deciding factor along with the condition of the starting system ( starter condition and battery cables )

I went back about 4pm when it was about 40 degrees. After the second time on the heater it fired up reluctantly. After letting it warm up, I hitched on to my "new" plow and brought it home.

I thought we both said the same thing. It's my 135 that's different and doesn't have a cap on the bottom tank.

I apologize for that mistake rrlund I read your post incorrectly, I needed to know so I went to the Agco parts book to check and we are all correct, the vented on the bottom the non vented on the top.

Reminds me of a local high school. They changed their mascot from the Red Skins to the Black Knights. Didn't seem like much of an improvement to me.

Our local high school was the Braves, had to change, local tribe even said they didn't care, they dropped the S and now are the brave

Oh, THAT kind of white guy..... :D

I would think seller could get almost twice that $ for that tractor. Was to a farm show today. Have you seen the price for a similar size new Kabota?

I knew exactly what he meant when I saw it. I didn't even think of anything else until I read the other comments. He was just seeking some tractor advice. Just like some of the other posters on here.
