Barn collapse....a good ending

Here in upstate NY (Schoharie County), we got hammered in the recent storm. A local farmer had a barn collapse with over 100 head inside.

Good news....all cattle are out and OK

Farmers and firefighters rescued 150 trapped cows Tuesday night after a 20,000-square-foot dairy barn collapsed under the weight of three feet of snow, officials said

Crews were called to the Stanton Family Farm, located at 3271 County Route 145 in Middleburgh, at 6:28 p.m.
"We were on the scene within 10 minutes, even with the snow," Devlin said, noting the blizzard conditions and below freezing temperatures. "Over three-fourths of the barn had already collapsed."
About 25 firefighters and 20 local farmers descended on the building but had to shore up the walls before any rescue efforts could begin.
The crew used a new Paratech stabilization kit and heavy-duty farm equipment to keep what was left of the barn standing, Devlin said.
The Middleburgh Fire Department purchased the stabilization struts just last week for $16,000. They can hold up 20,000 to 80,000 pounds, he said.

Its good to hear no animals or people got seriously hurt or killed.farming is tough enough when
things go right,,it sure is a tough situation for the farmer

Seems to happen every winter in the Schoharie/0tsego/Delaware county areas. Maybe it should be a hint to build stronger roofs. I lived there
40 years and it did not take me long to learn that lesson.

I would imagine that there are enough empty dairy barns around the area to keep the cattle housed. That Middleburg/ Schoharie is a nice place to farm and live. Just hope they had a rider on their insurance policy to cover the building collapse. It is one of those coverages that many think is part of their farm owners policy but it is often not included.

He's one of the bigger operations in our general area milking between 300 & 400 head

I'm guessing / hoping his insurance will cover it

Word has it that a majority of the cattle in that barn were heifers and calves

Back during the big flood of 2011, Ken took in the entire herd of a local farm that got flooded. He fed and milked the whole herd until the flooded farmer was able to take them back...which was quite a while

The Stantons are good people
