Rebuilding corrall pictures

I penned up a few heifers to wean last week, and they busted out of my corrall. It had been patched up for years, all the posts rotten. I figured if I wanted to wean anymore heifers, I was going to have to rebuild it. First, I had to work on the post hole digger. Freed up the shaft, welded up the frame, replaced a cross bearing and it was ready to work. Neighbor gave me a few locust posts, was able to re use the panels, and I added a top board. Was a trick driving the steeples into those locust posts! Just lack hanging the gates. The Massey wasn't working as hard as I was.

Just use vise grips to hold steeples untill there started, saved alot is smashed fingers. It's hard to find good steeples that won't bend too.

One more time.

Drove a million staples in black locust over the years. Always held them with my fingers.
Split 3300 black locust fence posts in the early 80's. All by hand using a wedge and maul.
Could not do that now.

You must have a different type of locust then we have around here. It hardly makes good firewood around here,

I used to tap the staple so it marked the post, then drilled small holes. Takes little longer but no more frustrating missing or bent staples.

the old time Black Locust in West Virginia were sometimes good for 75 years. I personally know of some set in 1958 still holding fence. Locust planted on the strip mines in the 1970's were gone in 5 years if you tried to use'em as posts.

You guys all think driving them in Locust is hard you ought to try it in those limestone ones in KS. :)
I thought I would like to get some of them for here where they rot out power poles for fence posts quite fast. On Muck I bet they would not float up or pull up as fast as wooden ones would.

4520bw,
Neighbor is in need of Locust posts. He says he can't find any. So does anyone know where he can buy locust posts?

Cedar posts are used around here-don't have any black locust that I'm aware of. 8)

(quoted from post at 18:56:22 03/10/17) It tickles me different areas call those crowned wire holders. Here we call them STAPLES.
We use the term "steeples" around here too in Eastern Ontario.... Not sure why.....
