Yup. Some people do pronounce the first syllable as "skeh" but either way's common.

I get a kick out of the local news people who come from way off somewhere, and can't pronounce local town names. There is Lebanon which they pronounce like the country next to Israel, when it is supposed to be pronounced Lebnun. And then they talk about Berlin like the city in Germany, when the proper pronunciation is Buhl'n.

Little town near me is Flom. Pronounced flum. Ulen is pronounce you-len. Syre is pronounced Si-ree. Twin Valley is pronounced twin valley

Try Gouverneur. You can always tell when a transplant from out of the area gets on TV or radio here. "Goo-ver-new-er" or "Gov-ven-or". Nope, "Gov-ven-ooo-er".

Quite a few names not pronounced like they are spelled around here. Leicester in Livingston County is pronounced "Lester." Over by Rochester Chili is pronounced "Ch(eye)-lie" and Charlotte is pronounced "Char-lot." Back over in Livingston County Avon is pronounced with the A as a short vowel. Interlaken is pronounced "In-ter-lake-n." People from Romulus to my knowledge never considered themselves "Romulans" like the adversaries on Star Trek.

Lowville NY. Pronounced Lauwville. That one gets everybody who doesn't live in this area. New Breman pronounce New Breeeman. My last name. German pronunciation of Lehman- Leeman. Local pronunciation- Layman. May have had something to do with my ancesters wanting to distance themselves from Germany because of the two wars, but I'm not sure.

I spent a lot of time in Schenectady and even learned how to spell it as I wrote to a girl there when I was overseas in the military. The romance did not work out as she Dear Johned me when she found a better looking guy. MY GOOD! I worked for GE there for a while before opting to become a teacher. It is sken ec ta d for sure.
